All damn day, he had the feeling he was being watched.

No matter where he went in the Junkyard, he felt as though a very intense gaze was on his back. Being that he was stuck in the compound all day, Étienne had Glasgow with him, and the wolfdog had not once reacted to any kind of intruder, or suspicious behaviour. It made the man that much more paranoid — was he just imagining things?

He doubts it. Even with all his impulsivity, Étienne was very aware of his surroundings, and it's what helped him survive outside the walls when he used to live in the Inner Citadel and make occasional trips outside for fun. It's also what helped him become Boss of Eclipse, being very aware of threats when out on business. The man had learned long ago to trust his own instincts, even if nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary. That was why he decided to trust his instincts and figure out once and for all what — or who — was following him around camp.

Étienne didn't change anything about his behaviour as he walked, fingers lazily stroking Glasgow's head as the wolfdog walked happily beside him. His grey-blue eyes flickered back and forth, looking at all the places that someone could be hiding. The problem with living in a Junkyard was just how many hiding places there were. Finally he made his way to his destination: the Sleeping Quarters. The stacked containers allowed him to duck into the narrow space between two of them, essentially visually cutting him off from anyone that was trying to follow him unless they entered the space with him. With a silence command from his owner, Glasgow sits down beside him and keeps quiet, gaze trained to his master's face.

Étienne, on the other hand, presses himself up against the container and slows his breathing. So he waits.

It doesn't take long, even if for a second he begins to doubt himself. But soon the telltale crunching of gravel breaking underfoot reaches his ear. A shadow spreads out as someone draws close. The Eclipse Boss holds his breath, eyes slightly narrowed as he waits. One more second — without any hesitation, as soon as a physical body enters his vision, he reaches out and snatches the arm of the person. Simultaneously dragging them into the narrow space of the storage containers and spinning them around as he does so, he slams them up against the container wall, pinning them there with one of his hands clenching the fabric of their shirt. Papers fly in the air as he does so, and it takes only a couple seconds before he blinks and realizes he recognizes the person.

“Minnow?” Glasgow barks beside him, jumping at the papers flying about.

Admittedly, Minnow had no plans of following Étienne and Glasgow around that day and likely wouldn’t have had she not been struck with inspiration. After that, she became their shadow, following with a loosely bound, handmade sketch book in hand just out of sight. Perhaps if she heeded logic, she would have known following around the Boss of the Eclipse would have resulted poorly. She’d known, after all, from her many times eavesdropping that no one appreciates being followed. It was something even Aunt Ferrah had warned her of. Of course, none of that stopped her from believing she could be stealthy enough to capture the natural beauty of master and wolfdog walking together.

It took well over the course day for her to even begin getting the faint semblance of a sketch she liked. Many pages had been ripped out, scribbled on and shoved back between the pages yet to face an artist’s wrath. Nothing seemed to quite right. Nothing spoke to her. Between trailing Étienne and exposing herself just long enough to begin sketching, she’d yet to draw something worth turning into a painting. Normally, she would have simply given up in search of something else to spark her inspiration but she refused this time. She could not give up now that, after hours, she’d begun to create something worth painting. It only needed a few more adjustments.

Adjustments that she couldn’t make because Étienne had ducked out of her line of vision. After a moment of quiet, in case he popped back out, Minnow followed after him, hoping to finally catch a glimpse of the angle she needed to be pleased with her art. What she got instead was dragged and pinned against the wall. She dropped her sketchbook and watched her number of very private and personal art on loose paper flew into the air. She was too surprised to scream in surprise.

Instead, she stared up at Étienne with wide, surprised eyes. He seemed to recognize her but by then, a few tears had already escaped her. More might have come had she not glanced at the floor. All of her art, all of her hard work was on the ground. Many of them she never wanted anyone to see, scandalous and sensual in nature and absolutely not for public viewing. Quickly her tears were replaced by a bright blush of embarrassment.

Minnow?

“Yes. Get off.” Her tone, however soft, was flat as she tried to push against him in a rush to collect her works before he turned and saw them.

The surprise on Minnow's face was most likely mirrored on Étienne's face, as out of all of the people he maybe would have expected to be stalking him, she was the least likely. While they weren't close friends by any means, they were still rather familiar with one another, considering they had both been in the Lunar Eclipse branch of the group before Étienne had risen to the position of Boss. From what he did know of the woman, this sort of... Stalking certainly wasn't something he was familiar with.

His shock is what keeps his hand fisted in her clothing for a moment too long, loosening only when he suddenly notices the tears in her eyes. Oh no. This wasn't something he was used to dealing with, and he probably looked ridiculous standing there frozen, unable to react immediately to help the woman stop from crying. But then she speaks and pushes back against his hold, and it snaps him out of his moment of panic. Immediately he releases the front of her shirt and takes a step back, giving some room to Minnow who was staring desperately at the ground.

“I apologize, I wasn't expecting... Well, I was expecting someone else,” he mumbles what is his best version of an apology, even if he can't really admit what he was expecting. Perhaps he was just too paranoid nowadays, thinking some sort of Military spy was stalking him. Ha, as if. It's then he finally notices the papers starting to settle on the ground around them, and he recognizes the sketched lines enough to know it was her drawings. They must have fallen when he suddenly yanked her between the two storage containers.

“Let me help you with that,” he offers and immediately bends down to help Minnow collect her fallen art before Glasgow tramples it—

Only to pause as fingers brush across a familiar shape.

Étienne snatches the paper off the ground before Minnow has a chance to protest — if she would — and draws his gaze down to the figure on the paper. Pecs, abs, a sloping v-line towards a rather scandalous part of the man's anatomy. His eyes draw themselves away from the spot as he takes in the rather accurately drawn facial features of the sketched man. It was Ares. Étienne's rather impressed by how accurate the drawing was — even the parts that he had assumed only his eyes had ever seen — but the mix of shock and curiosity keep his face blank of emotions as he slowly lifts his head.

He matches her gaze with his own. He doesn't say anything, simply pinches the piece of paper between two fingers before turning it around to show Minnow what he was looking at, his brow lifting questioningly as his look throws her a silent question: What's this?

“Don’t care.”

She didn’t want to hear his apologies. She didn’t care. She wasn’t even upset that he shoved her up against a wall. All she wanted right now, all she needed was to get her hard work off of the ground. They were precious to her. Every single one was a labor of love, an expression of the words she so often kept inside her. They were special, private, and certainly not meant to be seen by the likes of Étienne. Truly, she had no issue with him. It was what he could find in the sketches littered on the ground that terrified her.

‘Let me help you with that--’

No!

A shout formed in her throat to warn him off of the idea. She didn’t need his help! He could see-! But he did see. He snatched the paper off of the ground and she felt like she might faint. She had no words. The angry shout died in her throat when she turned the paper in his hand to her, as if he was waving her shame in her face.

Minnow’s cheeks immediately turned a bright, humiliated shade of red and though she averted her gaze quickly, she caught the question in his eyes. It was only because he had not found the worst of her sensual art that she did not faint on the spot. Those, she was clever enough not to bring with her, or, not forget she brought with her.

Minnow buried her face in her hands first, to stop him from seeing the tears leaking from her eyes. Why did he have to see? Why had she been stupid enough to forget she brought them with her? The rest of the art was forgotten on the ground in face of her overwhelming shame.

No one was supposed to see those. No one was ever supposed to see those. She whimpered quietly into her palms, turning away from him so she wouldn’t have to see his face. This is what happens when you are not cautious. She tried to quiet herself from making much noise as she cried, she tried to disappear, but she was successful with neither.

Instead, she tried to make a plea. “Please,” she sniffled, “Don’t tell Ares.”

She knew there was nothing she could do to stop Étienne if sharing her humiliating art was what he wanted to do, but still she pleaded. What would Ares think? She dreaded to know and instead hoped this awful moment would be over so she could cry where no one could see her.

He spots the way her cheeks immediately flush with embarrassment — with how fair her skin was to begin with, it was no surprise how much the blush actually showed on her face — and Étienne doesn't hide the small smirk that begins to play on his lips. Minnow quickly turns away from him, probably just to hide her shame, and he decides not to push her any further.

He doesn't hear her cry; probably for the best, considering he doesn't have the most experience with helping people to stop crying. He simply watches as she appears to almost curl in on herself, embarrassed by him seeing the drawing of Ares. Étienne knows in the back of his mind that he still wanted to know why exactly Minnow had been following him all day, but at the moment he was more curious about the sensual and almost lewd drawing of Ares.

He blinks in surprise as she finally speaks, begging him not to tell Ares. He had thought the young man had actually posted for the drawing, but maybe it had been done in secrecy instead? He decides to push just a little more.

“I'm more surprised than anything. I didn't realize you guys were like...” he trails off for a moment as he flips the piece of paper around to observe it again, before lifting his gaze back to her face: “Like that.” It didn't really surprise him. Ares was a handsome young man, and it would be weird if he didn't have his own admirers from people more his own age, both men and women alike. Even though Étienne had assumed he was the only one Ares had slept with, perhaps he just didn't pay attention enough to what was going on in Ares's love life. Interesting.

“It certainly is accurate and detailed,” he hums in thought as he looks back down at the drawing again, not yet confirming nor denying whether or not he was going to tell Ares. He wasn't a snitch of course and wouldn't go running to tattle — but a part of him wanted to see Ares blush in embarrassment as well. He grins at the thought.

If it were possible for her face to be any redder, it would be. She was beyond mortified and unsure what she could possibly do to get out of this situation. It was not as though running away would be an option. She would be leaving that with him and even worse, he would see her again. How she would ever manage to look him in the eyes again was a mystery she wasn’t ready to even begin solving.

The bigger problem was that Ettie hadn’t given the paper back, which meant she couldn’t leave and to make matters even more embarrassing, he kept talking to her. She peered through the gaps between her fingers when he implied she and Ares were like that. Quickly, Minnow shook her head back and forth. “We’re—! I’m—! We didn’t—! I—! We haven’t—!” They weren’t but she could hardly get the words out because she was too busy panicking.

Why hadn’t he agreed not to show Ares? Was he planning on teasing her for this? She wanted to ask, desperately, but between her tears and quickening breathing she couldn’t begin to say more than a few seemingly random words. She wanted this to be over so she could go back to being someone no one noticed. Why, of all things, did this have to happen to her? And why did it have to be Ettie? She couldn’t avoid him from the rest of his life even like she wanted to.

There was no winning.

And when hummed about how accurate and detailed it was, she swore she was going to faint. Wait. “A-Accurate?” She asked before she truly thought about what she was saying. Her curiosity got the better of her for a moment, though the humiliation of asking that reeled her back in. “Nevermind! Just don’t tell Ares, please!

It wasn't like Étienne made a habit of making women cry.

That wasn't something he was generally interested in doing. If anything, he was usually more of a gentlemen towards them than he was others of his same gender. But that didn't mean he wasn't thoroughly enjoying this situation, considering he wasn't actually hurting her in any way. He just can't help the smirk on his lips as he continues to look over the drawing, still marveled by how accurate it appeared to be. He heard her stumbling over her words as he implied that her and Ares were hooking up, but from the way she was panicking it was clear they weren't.

... Why did that make him somewhat happy?

But eventually Étienne knew when his little teasing game was getting too far, and he shushed her gently as she once again began to beg him not to show Ares the drawing. Much as he wanted to hang it up in his apartment and gloat over it the next time Ares visited him... He didn't want to cause problems between him and the woman in front of him.

“Alright, alright, you can have it back. Here— hm?” As Étienne had begun to hand the drawing back to Minnow, Glasgow suddenly ran up beside him again, huffing softly as he held something gently between his teeth. It was another piece of paper — clearly the wolfdog had noticed the two humans scrambling to pick up the paper, and had decided to join in on the collection. Étienne smiles gently and pats the black wolfdog's head as a thank you, before he grabs the paper with his other hand.

Just as he's about to hand it back to Minnow— It's almost like deja vu. The way he stares at the picture for a moment with surprise in his eyes, before he pinches it between two fingers and once again lifts it to show Minnow. He doesn't say anything again, but this time he's grinning as he does so. It's him. The new drawing is him, in a very similar... Fashion to the Ares drawing.
