Yes! Wait, no. I've totally seen that building before.

Ares stopped, as if the fifth appearance of that one squat brick building nestled between two larger concrete constructs, the one with vines that crawled up it like veins, had syphoned all hope out of the young looter. Ares sighed out the exasperation and found a spot on the outside wall of that building to rest his shoulders and lean his head back against.

It was then he resigned to the fact that he was lost. The Abandoned Town was still new territory for Ares, as he never felt the urge, nor confidence, to wander its winding streets and crowd of buildings. He was getting better at navigating it, having mapped out the entirety of that district near the old mall, but there were times where he would fine himself circling around, stuck in a maze of crumbled houses and broken roads.

He tilted his head back up, the survival instinct in him prompting him not to rest his eyes for too long, when his gaze came across something unusual in the distance. It was a recumbent structure, made of cinder block and a flat, concrete roof. More importantly, it was extraordinarily well-preserved, half-encircled by less-than-useful chain link fence. His woes forgotten, he shouldered his pack back on and wandered through a torn part of the fence.

The dusted windows were covered by curtains, and so it was impossible to glimpse inside of the building. There was a sign that stood sentinel in the front, proudly displaying in elegant letters "Hudson High School". Ares finally found a point of entrance, a locked back door, in which he easily maneuvered with a pick.

The door yawned open and a cloud of dust had Ares waving his hand in front of his face, sputtering and blinking the detritus from his eyes. When dust-induced tears no longer ran down his face, a stretch of nothingness greeted him.

He could've turned back. Try to pick his way back out of the Abandoned Town, as the sky was growing orange and vibrant with the promise of dusk. But he was well-supplied, and more convincingly, curious, and so crept into the dark hallway.

He was immediately hit with a wave of air, stale at having been trapped indoors for so long. In it was a hint of rot, like a dead animal was stuck somewhere in the ceiling of the place. It did not take long for low growls from the darkest parts of the school to send Ares scurrying behind what looked to be an upturned desk. His heart raced like panicked hooves when those growls emanated not just closer, but from more than one spot.

Ares had just wandered into an Infected nest.

Another day, another mission.

This one is particularly standard as far as expeditions go- recon had discovered a building in the Abandoned Town with Infected activity, and they were being sent to clear it out. Usually, the town in general is left alone by the military; it's filled with drifters and grifters, non-citizens that are not to be concerned with- but the Infected are another story. One nest here means the formation of another nest in a matter of weeks, closer to Stronghold's limits, and if left alone they'd have a horde knocking down their walls.

Thus, Ananke and her team had been sent to pull out the problem by the roots.

Their target this time is Hudson Highschool, one of the larger buildings in surrounding area. Though from the outside the place looked abandoned, any Nest Elimination officer would know better. The bigger a structure, the more places for shadows to collect, and the more Infected that can hide in their depths. If fully infested, there'd be upwards of ten Ferals, and possibly a Reaper to boot.

"All units in position?" her squad leader's voice buzzes through the radio just as she and her team take their agreed upon places.

"Roger," she phones in. Over the rustle of tactical uniforms and the adjusting of firearms, she hears the command to being operations. "Let's go."

The inside is dark as expected, poorly lit except for the hallways somewhat illuminated through broken windows. Ananke treads carefully through the hallways as she and her teammates clear room after room. They would have to methodically comb through the entire facility to find them, but already she can hear the scratching of claws on tile, the soft snarls of Ferals stalking about somewhere in the building.

And then...

"Hold." There's another sound mixed in. Heavy footfalls from someone clearly not trained in infiltrating Infected nests. "...there may be a civilian here." Protocol states that if for whatever reason the squad finds another human in or near an Infected nest to escort them away if safe to do so, but that's provided that they survive long enough to the soldiers to find them...

Any individual would be foolish to enter the perimeter of an Infected nest alone, especially when one was as untrained and ill-equipped as Ares. He was sorely reminded of that fact when, crouched behind the upturned desk, all he had to defend himself was a rifle, the barrel of which was attached to the svelte forend by several hearty layers of duck tape.

He pulled that rifle out, as softly as he could muster, yet even the rustle of his pack sounded loud against his ear. He hoped, prayed, that the sudden inflection of growls were in response to another stupid explorer who'd accidentally wandered into the building.

Well, he was half right. There was another presence in the twisted halls, yet it was not by accident, nor was it a single person. The Infected's snarls started to grow dimmer, as the activity in the background drew their attention. Ares, tentatively, poked his head over the desk. He couldn't see much, but the shadows were no longer moving, and the dust that fluttered through the air had settled.

With a deep breath, Ares tightened his grip on the rifle and sprinted from his spot. He meant to go towards where he'd entered, but the farther he went, the more he realized that he was, once again, completely and utterly lost.

Not only that, but in his panic, he didn't realize he was being hunted. He was suddenly knocked from his feet and, on his bare neck, he felt cool saliva caress him.

"Nnnggg," he whined at the unpleasant, liquid feeling, but moreso at the waft of hot decay that assaulted his nostrils. Out of instinct, he thrust his free arm forward into a fist. It met what felt like an iron wall, and probably had pained his digits more than it did the Infected that had caught him. His heart hammered in his throat, and suddenly his thoughts drifted from the need to survive to nervous thrill that those sabre-like fangs might tear into his flesh. He thrashed, struggled, but was locked in place and escape didn't look promising.

With the way the building is structured, with its twisting halls and half stair-cases and floors, part by design and part because of natural decay, it's difficult to decipher exactly where each sound is echoing from. However, with experience and intuition, the specialist can tell- deep within, Infected are crawling about, but deeper still, there's a person, a human, running for their life.

Ananke freezes. Stay in the formation, and break off and find the civilian? The mission is important, but so is protocol...

Her squad leader makes the decision for her. For a second, she had forgotten that it hadn't been up to her to decide in the first place. "Specialist Drakos," the tinny voice commands via radio. "Leave formation and track down the civilian. The rest of you, proceed with the sweep." There's a brief feeling of rest, having been relieved of the burden of choice, but the soldier tenses again when she realizes that she's been instructed to go alone. They don't quite have enough manpower to justify more than one person pursuing this task, it seems.

"...yes sir," Ananke murmurs, before darting off to track down the source of the errant footfalls.

She moves quicker now, no longer required to march in step with a group, but that doesn't guarantee survival for her or the civilian. At this point, it depends who meets first- her and an infected, her and the civilian, or God forbid...

The civilian gets caught and knocked off his feet by a Reaper.

The specialist moves by instinct. "Stay down!"

Over the rapid beating of his own heart, the low, hungered growls emitting from slobbering jowls, he heard rushed footsteps echoing on the tiles. A voice split the air, distant yet punctuating, as if it had originated from his own mind, "Stay down!".

A string of saliva hit Ares' cheek, hot and slimy as it slithered down his face. The smell and feeling nearly made Ares retch over the bite of his words, "Uh, sure. Can't really do anything else!". The Infected didn't seem to like its prey speaking, as it snapped its jaws at Ares who moved his head away so all he felt was the rush of air as the beast missed.

Ares thought he'd had been dead already. One bite alone from Infected was enough to prove lethal. Maybe, if the soldier had not intervened, this could have been the end. The thought of becoming one of those, mindless and rotted and deadly, mustered Ares enough energy to give one final thrash that loosened the creature's grip on the looter. He tired to scramble away, but found with dismay the creature had him caught with an arced claw staking his shirt into the a crevice in the tile.

The youth tugged and pulled and thought the thread gave way a little, it was not enough to free him from the Infected's grip. The creature had recovered then, with a shake of its fanged head, and glared at Ares with eyes that reflected Hell itself. It opened its maw wide then, lifted a clawed appendage high, and Ares' knew then that it sought to dig those digits into his chest. He could only brace himself, one free arm coming up to shield his face, his troso, in a last effort to keep his humanity.

He thought of Etienne, then. The feeling that blossomed in his chest whenever he saw the blonde's arrogant smirk that seemed perpetually carved on that perfect face, that seemed to be smiling at him then and saying "you really fucked up this time, kid". And then of his mother, and how his last memory of her would be the argument they had when the world was filled with cricket-song, and Ares had shouted "this is why dad left us!". Ares knew, that if he had died then, it would not be in peace.

The boy hears her, and actually listens. Good. He'd be surprised by how many people outright refuse commands from a soldier, even one that's trying to save their life. Be it a lack of faith in the military or fear ruling over thought, there have been plenty of endangered civilians who didn't know how to follow even the simplest of instructions and then subsequently got eaten.

He stays still long enough for Ananke to get close, catching the attention of the infected for a brief moment. With two viable prey in front of it, the animal seems a little conflicted, and it's that moment of hesitation that lets Ananke line up her shot just right-

At least, that's what she thinks, before the boy tries to run. "Wh- no!" It's too late to intervene; soon enough, Ares is pinned down and the center of attention again.

Fool. There's no way to get a clean shot anymore, which means she has to go in up close an personal. Not an impossible task, but never easy, and definitely never clean. It's too much to ask, she supposes, to end one mission not covered in grime, filth, and Infected blood and intestines.

Grabbing one of her combat knives, Ananke breaks into a running sprint and launches herself at the creature from behind. Let's see if she still remembers how to do this.

One arm hooks around the neck, the other curls around near the wrist in a modified headlock. Caught off guard, the Reaper thrashes from side to side in an attempt to throw her off. She uses her legs to gain purchase instead. "I told you," she says through grit teeth, struggling to maintain her grip as the creatures claws scratch and claw at her armor. "To stay. Down." In a moment of weakness, the Reaper gives Ananke enough purchase to jam the knife through the side of its throat, and with each punctuating word, the Specialist yanks the blade sideways. It takes two heaving strokes to decapitate the thing, blood and sinew and bone spattering everywhere. The corpse sways and jerks for longer than a corpse should, before falling on its side.

Ananke sighs. One mission. Is that too much to ask?

He could feel the creatures hot, putrid breath blasting over his face with every, saliva-filled exhale. Spittle splattered down on his cheeks and Ares instinctively tried to push his head back further into the cracked tile beneath, wishing that he could melt into the floor. That open maw, stretching as far as it could go, taut by strings of saliva, lunged forward. The looter closed his eyes, breath caught in his throat, impeding death causing his limbs to go frozen in a helpless state that would embarrass him looking back.

And then a shrill scream split the air. Ares had expected a flurry of pain, but instead, the weight above him lifted off and he blinked open his eyes to find the weight off his arms gone and that he could sit up on his elbows. What's more is that he saw the beast reeled up before him, and behind it, a smaller woman with a pale arm slung around it's neck, like it were a chain digging into the neck of a troublesome hound.

He watched in awe as the woman, at the opportune time with the beast's shaking head leaned away from her, she sawed something into its throat, something that made the beast squeal so piercingly Ares' hands came up to cover his ears. With artful strokes, punctuated by the woman's cross words at Ares, the beast's head came toppling off, landing on the ground with a wet sploch. Its exposed neck expelled black blood and bits of flesh, as well as its body that jerked and spasmed like nothing mortal, all of which rained down on Ares below. He swore some of it got in his mouth and leaned to side to sputter and spit.

His face twisted in disgust at the feeling of Infected innards and juices coating him. That expression did not stay for long, as moss green eyes found the exasperated form of the woman who'd saved him. As if he had not contemplated his own death moments before, he sprung up to his feet and raced over to her with admiration sparkling in his eyes.

"That was, like, wicked cool!" he exclaimed, his voice ringing off of their otherwise eerily quiet surroundings. "Where did you learn to do that?"

The specialist doesn't get up right away, even as the beast goes down. After all, Infected are still hard to kill, even for those specially trained for it. The possibility of the monster playing dead only to bite back at the worst possible time is too real for her not to be careful. It's only when the spasming fades, the breathing stops, and Ananke can confirm that the thing is dead that she finally picks herself off the ground and wipes the viscera off of her knife. There's not much of a point in trying to wipe off the rest of her, but at this point she's used to being covered in grime and various Infected... fluids. Thank God for the helmet and full coverage uniform.

Unfortunately, it looks like her job isn't done yet; there's still a civilian to escort out of the way of danger, and unlike most, he's not content to curl up and cower in the fact of the infected like so many others. She can't help but wince at the piercing noise- usually missions don't involve the sound of enthusiastic children yelling at you. "I am a specialist of the Nest Elimination branch," she announces, both answering his question and reminding him that she is in a place of authority that he should probably respect. Or at least, be less... friendly with. "And my orders are to escort you out of the premises so that you don't interfere with the rest of the mission."

His reasons for being here don't matter. She's not here to question him or even learn his name... But while he's still in this building, Ananke's team can't consider their mission completed. "So if you want to live, you'll do what I say and come with me."

The hesitation, disgust, perhaps even disdain in her gaze escaped Ares. For she had just saved them, and for that, she couldn't have possibly been unfriendly or unwelcoming- the Infected fluids, guts and gore draped across his chest and wetting his shirt notwithstanding.

Her identification came out as gibberish to Ares, but it all sounded so cool and formal. Ares eyes sparkled, as he breathed, "Wow..." as she ran through her credentials and her reason for being here. The Nest Elimination branch? Was there a drifter colony big enough where there could be an entire unit dedicated to eradicating Infected nests?

Then, sense came over him. The uniform, its immaculate and invariable condition compared to the piecemeal armor the Eclipse scrounged for. The cold, disciplined look in her eye, the steadiness of her stance and shoulders, like it had been trained into her from birth. An undefeated aura about her that screamed a status elevated from mere survival. She wasn't a drifter, or merc- she was Military.

Ares was set uneasily. It was visible, too, as recognition flared in his eyes and he took a step back from her. His hands lifted to find his secondary weapon, a knife tucked in the hem of his pants. He rested a palm over it, ready to wrap his fingers around the hilt and unsheathe it from its rusty cloak.

Suspicion, distrust, it all elucidated from the scrunch of his shoulders, the tenseness from which he stood. Admiration was replaced by nerves. "W-what mission?" he stammered out to her, the knowledge of her membership and her group's mission to eradicate the Eclipse screaming in his mind.

Ugh.

He's young, enthusiastic, and worst of all, admiring. It might make him one of the easier types of civilians to deal with (the rebellious and violent ones are worse), but it does make him one of the more annoying ones. Ananke doesn't like being looked at like a hero. It only reminds her that she is anything but, and that she doesn't particularly want to be one either.

With the Infected dead, the two are safe (for now), and so Ananke takes a few seconds to get her bearings. They're on the third floor of the building, and there'll likely be more crawling around the staircases... They'll have to either scout for an alternate exit or find a way to draw their attention away...

Her concentration is broken by some movement in the corner of her eye- the uneasy shifting of someone trying to reach for a weapon. So he's naive and easily frightened. Perfect.

The soldier saunters up to the boy with as little care as she can muster. "Relax." If Ares could see through the visor of her helmet he'd realize how hard the Specialist had rolled her eyes. "If you're human, we're not here for you. Our only concern is exterminating the Infected that have nested in this building with as little collateral damage possible. That's you. You're the collateral damage." A stiff finger pokes into his chest. "Which we're trying to prevent. So get your toy out and be ready to follow any orders like 'run', 'hide', and 'stay down', and I can better guarantee your survival. Understood?"

Civilians.

Collateral damage.

He had heard the term used before, by Etienne and ex-Military Eclipse members. What did it mean again? And why was he collateral damage? He had zoned out, thinking on its definition and usage, before he realized the Military person had continued talking, and only registered the question "understood?".

Just nod. He nodded.

The soldier fell silent after that, and not wanting to live still in that tense, awkward moment, Ares scoured the floor for his fallen weapon. The rifle had somehow ended up a good ten feet from where Ares struggled with the Infected (the streaks of black Infected blood serving as a reminder) and he quickly gathered it up and fell back behind the woman. The hall was dark, incredibly so, and whatever light source the soldier used to navigate her way was not enough for Ares to find a way to slip out from behind her and make his escape. He was uneasy with the Military personnel, but when he thought of the alternatives, inevitably circling back to that hellish and almost lethal encounter, his best bet was with her. Probably.

His fingers were tense on the weapon, in which he was only able to feel his way through checking his gun's safety and parts for any hint of damage. Tabitha had warned him on becoming too reliant on his guns, as she had said, "Gun's fail. Humans are a bit more foolproof." There was a pang of memory and loss and Ares found he needed to speak, to talk, to distract himself, which was easy enough in these dangerous halls, swallowed by darkness.

"M-ma'am, if I may ask" he had tried to keep his voice cautious, quiet, but he found even the smallest of disturbances rang disturbingly loud. "Why are you... you guys, clearing Infected nests?" So far from Stronghold he wanted to finish, but refrained.
