”All skills and gear being equal, it generally does.” He countered, then shrugged at her question about if he found something funny. ”That comment: ‘play stupid games, win stupid prizes.’ I was told that back when I was fresh out of boot camp too…it’s funny, sometimes, seeing what’s been passed on.”

His eyes saw the tension in her bleed away slightly as he released her wrists. Malachi let the tension ease out of himself as well, despite how she narrowed her eyes at him. Her judgment he could handle.

Her bullets were another matter, but it seemed like that possibility was getting less and less likely, even as she prodded him once more with the gun barrel. Malachi didn’t move an inch at the push of that barrel, giving as little as the steel she was poking him with before she stepped back suddenly.

Licking his lips, he stepped back and sat on the edge of the desk she had been hiding behind once it was clear that she had no intention of shaking his hand. His arms crossed over himself as he looked at her, making it clear that there was no threat there. Once she told him she wanted him to stay away from her, he lifted his right hand, extending out his forefinger and middle finger to give her a jaunty little salute to her.

”If that’s what you want, no skin off my back, Scout.”

It was in her experience skills were hardly ever equal. Generally that seemed to be the reason why men got creative with their killing to begin with. Creating devices that could make them equal. Instead of continuing with the back and forth however, she just rose a brow and gritted her teeth closed. She was getting rather bored with his inability to let it go probably about as much as he was with hers.

After that, she had even more reason to lift a brow. He was a solider too? Somehow she figured that, but it hadn't become official until that moment. What he said didn't seem odd, but the way he said it, like the phrase had some nostalgia behind it, was.

They parted equally distance and Scout was all the more relieved for it. He agreed to leave her alone and as Scout saw his salute, she rolled her eyes. "Good." was all she offered him afterward, leaving the room and heading back down the hallways in which she had come to retrieve her gear. She had no idea where she was going to go, or what she was going to do, but knew she had to go back towards town. It was the only place halfway familiar, and it was the safest choice.
