NOTES N/A

He wasn’t much of a morning person — mainly due to the fact most of his work tended to revolve around the nighttime — but news of a motorcycle coming through the Junkyard’s gates was enough to rouse the Eclipse leader. There were very few things in life that really got his blood pumping, but vehicles of the two-wheeled kind were certainly one of those things. Changing into different clothes than the ones he wore to bed, Étienne leaves the cool comfort of his ‘apartment’, the crisp air of spring morning nipping at his nose. The rickety scaffolding that linked the various different ‘apartments’ together creaked and groaned as he made his way down to ground level, as if threatening to give out at any second. It was perhaps a far cry from the luxury he had grown up in, but the man didn’t mind it too much; living as a spoiled heir to his family’s legacy had long grown tiresome for him, and he didn’t really miss the creature comforts he had given up a long time ago.

Various different Eclipse members greet him as he passes by them, earning them a nod or a wave in returned greeting. They expect it, and took no offense to their leader’s non-verbal greetings. While Eclipse as a group was much smaller in size than anything in Stronghold, the Junkyard was a pretty large compound, and it took a fair amount of time for Étienne to make his way towards the communal hall. The only properly-built structure in the entire camp, it stood out against everything surrounding it, a beacon of where most of the group’s day-to-day activities took place. It was there that Eclipse also personally dealt with its smuggling and trading partners — the only place open to the public, so to speak. Étienne’s grey-blue eyes wander over its cold, grey exterior, silently making note of the various different cracks he spots in the framework. The one bad thing about living in the middle of nowhere, with supplies coming in limited quantities from Stronghold, was that repairs were often a necessity after winter left.

Pulling his coat tighter across his body, Étienne quickens his pace until he reaches the entrance to the communal hall, yanking open the door to finally be greeted with a little bit of warmth. Being the only solidly-constructed building in the compound meant it was the only one with proper heat, as well. Even though it was still relatively early in the day, the large interior was already relatively packed with people going about their business. Eclipse members were easily noticeable by the large black jackets they wore, the Eclipse group’s logo emblazoned on the front. It was probably the only time when members of the group wanted to be easily recognized by other people — any other time they typically wore nondescript clothing to blend in easier. Everyone else were either drifters or people secretly visiting from Stronghold, looking for a deal on something they couldn’t otherwise be supplied by the Military. Some of the faces were recognizable to him as regulars.

“This way, boss.” The man who had roused him from his sleep earlier greets him as he enters the hall, beckoning him towards the back of the building where the large garage doors were. The communal hall was at one time most likely a mechanic shop, which meant it was easy to get both regular goods inside, as well as transport vehicles. Étienne spots who he assums is the man that had brought them the motorcycle, as he wasn’t someone that he recognized. Must not be a regular client of theirs… No matter. Eclipse welcomed everyone that had money in their pockets.

“Welcome,” Étienne greets as he finally draws up alongside the unfamiliar man, as well as the Eclipse Sun that had been previously dealing with the man. The boss gives her a little nod to dismiss her, and she acknowledges his silent command with a grin before she wanders off to help some other drifter. “I hear you’ve brought a motorcycle to us today?” he questions as his gaze drifted towards the stranger, taking in the other man’s striking green eyes. “Looking for maintenance or to sell?” While they were known as a smuggler’s group, they could also be classified as a jack-of-all-trades group. They did what many others lacked the skills to do… For the right price, of course. As much as he wanted to see the motorcycle, he for now kept his attention on the man standing in front of him. Looking to be all professional and what not, right? That’s what his advisors told him to do at least.

Fuck the bike.

He’d needed something valuable to show at the gate and the bike had seemed a reasonable choice. Recovered recently during a raid on a small nest, it was the sort of salvage he’d heard Eclipse was interested in. Valuable enough to give him a reason to stick around and haggle, not just dump it at the door and leave, yet its providence was feasible to fit with the mercenary cover that had been, regrettably, forced on him. He’d had someone fix it up enough to run.

Except whoever had worked on it had screwed it up and the engine had packed up a few miles from the Junkyard, forcing Gabe to push it the final way. His arms ache from the effort and he’s sure he’s got a few delightful bruises on his shins where the fucking thing had attacked him.

He’s been in a bad mood about the new assignment all week, since being pulled into the office and given his new orders. Infiltration, really? Him? It’s a waste of time and he can’t help but think there’s something else behind it, some other reason they’re pulling him off active duty hunting down monsters and sending him to monitor Eclipse. It’s a waste of his talents and he hates it, but he can’t work out where he fucked up so badly that they’ve wanted to get rid of him for a while. Eclipse is an annoying leech on society had hardly a threat compared to the vamps, a few would-be rebels too scared to take on the Military in truth. From the research he’d done, they were nothing more than opportunistic scroungers, taking advantage of the desperate to make a few extra dollars.

But he was loyal, so he’d obeyed without questioning it.

He misses his uniform and the comforting weight of his rifle. The costume they’d assigned him is comfortable but worn, tactically practical, and he tries not to think too hard about where it’s come from. The gun he’d been assigned – a sad pretender to the Military-assigned rifle he was used to using – had not been allowed past the gate, nor had the mismatched bits of body armour, and he feels naked.

He flirts absently with the Eclipse member who takes him further into the building as a way to cover his annoyance, though his attention is on the base itself. As hoped, the bike is enough of a prize to draw someone more important than those assigned to the front gate, and he spends the time trying to draw more information about the group out from the woman who waits with him. They clearly don’t trust he won’t wander off if left unattended.

He’s made little progress with his watcher when someone else arrives. Gabe eyes them up appreciatively for a moment before his gaze settles on their face. Clearly someone the woman had been subordinate to, from the silent interaction as they’d traded places, but he has no idea who he’s dealing with. Military intelligence on the group had been patchy at best. It doesn’t really matter. He just needs a way in, someone to convince he could be useful and to vouch for him when he eventually tries to worm his way into the group proper.

“Morning,” he drawls, fingers possessively curling around the bike. Now that he’d pushed the fucking thing so far he’s determined to get a decent price for it, even if the money means nothing to him. “It depends. What are you offering?” Having it fixed wouldn’t be a bad option either, he decides, as it gives him a reason to come back, and whatever workshop they operate might be further into the base than he’d been allowed so far. “I know what I’ve got, there’s not many of these left. Sure you can afford it?” Ok, it’s only a dirt bike, and it looks like it lost a fight with a bear, but working vehicles were rare enough for it to still be valuable. Even if this one wasn’t, technically, entirely working at the moment.

Seriously. Fuck the bike.

The way the other man’s fingers curl tighter around the bike isn’t missed by the Eclipse leader, but it doesn’t bother him any to see it either — in a dog eat dog world like theirs, people were often very possessive of material possessions, especially when they had so few of them. Étienne casts another quick glance over the bike as the other man greets him, impressed with the state of the thing. Motorcycles were perhaps the hardest thing for the smuggler’s group to get their hands on, considering they were much easier to break down and rust compared to their four-wheeled cousins. Grey-blue eyes drag themselves back up to the other man’s face as he speaks again, and for the first time Étienne really takes in the other man’s appearance. He’s young, and there’s no denying his rather appealing features. Too pretty, maybe? Most drifters he dealt with were mud-streaked and rugged, showering and shaving only once a month. Although, he didn’t know if the other man really was a drifter, or just a Stronghold civilian. Didn’t matter much to him.

Étienne tilts his head slightly at the man’s words, the faintest of smiles greeting his lips. Cold hard cash, the man thinks internally, but doesn’t voice it just yet. Although, of course, perhaps there was something else the man wanted instead. It was much easier to just trade supplies directly if that is what he was looking for. But it didn’t take long for the smile to disappear — however faint it had been — and the very faintest of scowls to contort his brow. Scoffs. Offended. While the man wasn’t wrong with what he said, it was almost insulting to insinuate that Eclipse couldn’t get their hands on what they wanted. Even if they didn’t take much by force, not like the dirty criminals of Stronghold, they certainly had enough to line the pockets of those that had what they wanted.

“If you’re here, I’m sure you already know the answer to that question.” Short. Curt. Straight to the point. Just a hint of annoyance slips through the cracks before he can catch himself, but it wasn’t like he was impolite, right? Merely showing a glimmer of his pride that only strengthened in force after his rise to power. He pauses as he takes another look at the bike, the way it sags and almost seems to visually groan as it rests on its kickstand. Dirty, mucked up, and noticeable issues… But nothing that they haven’t seen before. Hell, ask him and he’d swear they one time took in a car that looked like a pack of ferals had been chewing on it. As long as the motor ran and the majority of the parts were there, Étienne had confidence his mechanics could fix it up nice.

“I could take it off your hands for you,” a pause, a smirk, “provided it runs, of course. Regardless of this compound’s name, we’re not in the business of buying people’s junk.” He doesn’t let on to the full extent of his interest in the motorcycle. Why would he? That would simply be bad business.

“Care to start it up for me so I can take a look?” he continues, broaching the question in such a way that the other man could simply refuse if he wanted to. But if it did indeed run, Étienne knew Eclipse would pay a hefty price for such a valuable vehicle… If not for the group, then perhaps for his own personal hobby. Even though he had long since turned his back on his family and his rich way of life, he still had enough money to sleep easy at night.

It's clear to see he’s hit a nerve, but Gabe has no intention of backing down apologising. The irritation that flashes across the other man’s face is a salve to Gabe’s own bad mood, glad that he can bring someone else down with him. His head tilts to the left slightly as he briefly raises his eyebrows. Maybe.

“Maybe I just thought I’d try my luck here first, I was told you’d take anything,” he snipes back, oddly possessive now it was a contest, when he’d have happily abandoned the bike in a ditch somewhere earlier this morning if he hadn’t needed something to show at the door. Irritatingly the man continues – he’d known he wouldn’t be able to put off starting up the bike’s engine at some point, but he’d hoped to put it off a bit longer.

With a bravado that is entirely unjustified, he makes a show of turning the key and starting up the engine. For a moment he thinks that luck is smiling on him as the engine briefly flares to life, but then chokes to death in an echo of earlier, although there’s less cursing from Gabe this way around. There’s mock surprise plastered across Gabe’s face, not entirely believable, as he pulls back from the bike with a shrug and a cheeky grin. “May have hit a slight snag with the running bit of it,” he admits, breezily. “Ran fine earlier. Maybe it’s just out of petrol. Was a fair ride out here.” Considering his complete lack of knowledge about the vehicles, it could even be the case, though he doubts it.

Ah, so the man isn't going to back down after all. That's good; it meant he must have something good on his hands that he was proud of, right? Étienne takes a step back as the man motions to start the bike, his arms crossed over his chest as he waits for the familiar roar of the engine to kick in. For a moment it starts, a rich, thunderous applause that begs for someone to take it for a spin. But it doesn't last long, and it's a dramatic cry for the help as the engine sputters into a state of disrepair. Étienne calmly gazes down at the bike before lifting his gaze towards the man, a brow quirked questioningly.

He takes in the look of surprise on the man's face, and the way he tries to chuckle away what just happened. Étienne's initial hope dies away almost immediately — it wouldn't be the first time a drifter tried to scam them out of their money, as if they were ignorant.

“What incredibly unfortunate timing for you,” he grins, the stilted way in which he emphasizes his speech making it clear he wasn't entirely convinced the man hadn't been intending to scam them with a broken vehicle in the first place. Even the grin isn't friendly. It's cool, detached, lacking any sort of warmth one would expect from such an action.

“Perhaps you're right, perhaps all it needs is a little juice. However,” he takes a step closer, ever so slightly pushing the boundaries of acceptable distance between buyer and client, “I have to wonder if it even ran in the first place.” The insinuation in his words is very clear, but just in case it wasn't, he quickly follows up his words with:

“Tell me: should I really have one of my men go fetch some oil?” Or are you really just lying? He's curious now.

Curious how far this little game is going to stretch; how far this man was willing to take it. Perhaps Étienne was completely wrong, and they really were dealing with a motorbike that had the potential to be cleaned up and set to run. But he liked to think of himself as a good judge of character, being in the trade that he was, and something simply rang wrong for him. But then again, it wasn't like he had anything better to do, and he was willing to play the game so long as the other man did.

Gabe’s eyes study the other man, not stupid enough to mistake the kind words for anything but fake politeness. Watches as he takes a step closer towards Gabe, unsure whether it’s threat or power play or just part of the game. Whatever it is, it’s far more interesting than the bike. He’d much rather barter for a much different sort of ride.

“You think I’d come all the way out here if I didn’t have something decent to sell?” The Junkyard was hardly conveniently placed, one of the many reasons the military probably hadn’t bothered to do anything about it yet, and there’s the little issue of him being entirely unarmed in the smugglers’ stronghold. He’s no doubt that someone would just shoot him if they thought he was just trying to cheat them.

The other man is still willing to play. He can work with that. Shame that he was technically working; the man was pretty enough that Gabe would probably have bought him a drink and tried his luck, but he knows better than to risk his mission for a quick fuck. Or maybe it would be a quick hack to making friends, so long as he can make it a regular occurrence. Wishful thinking, maybe, since he doesn’t even know the other man’s name.

“Fetch some oil,” he mock commands, and takes a step forward to match the smuggler’s, though the my men comment doesn’t go unnoticed. Someone with some sort of rank in the organisation then, which is exactly what he’s looking for. “Trust me. I’ll make it worth your time.”

NOTES N/A

“I've seen people make worse decisions than that,” he quips back, which wasn't entirely a lie. In his short time as boss of Eclipse, he's seen a lot of people try to scam them. In some ways some amount of understanding could be extended to such people desperate enough for some food or warm clothes. Not that he himself had any sympathy, of course.

It was a personal truth as well, Étienne wasn't exactly blind to his own faults. It didn't help when his own advisors 'helpfully' pointed them out for him.

He lifts one of his eyebrows as the drifter mocks his words, as if daring to try and order around someone from Eclipse to do as he says. Étienne catches movement from the corner of his eye and he looks over at the Eclipse sun that had been lingering around since the start. She's looking at him with confusion in her eyes: clearly she wasn't about to just take an order from someone other than her own Boss, and he merely nods in acknowledgement. Do as he says. There's no loss of pride, as he feels no threat from someone beneath him. His gaze turns back to the matter at hand when his own step forward is matched, the space between them disappearing by the second. He holds his ground though, a huff of laughter leaving him at the next few words.

“It takes a lot of work to make something worth my while,” Étienne sneers, because oh, it's going to be that kind of game is it? He's obvious about the way in which he gives the man a once over — he won't admit he rather likes what he sees, even it's wrapped up in a package of dirty, torn clothes — but he takes his time before he lifts his head once more, matching the other man's gaze with his own icy one.

“I doubt you'd be up to the challenge.” A taunt, a dare, because Étienne always did like to poke the metaphorical bear. He's cocksure with his attitude, arms still crossed over his chest as he stands his ground, chin lifted arrogantly as he stares the other man down — literally, even if the height difference is only a couple inches. He grins, twisted and mocking, but it's there nonetheless as he's curious towards what kind of reaction the other man is going to have while they wait for the Eclipse member to get back with some oil.

Self-satisfaction blooms as his order is obeyed, though he’s surprised that the other man hasn’t pulled it up on him; it’s clear he thinks Gabe’s probably lying, and he does have to wonder what there is to gain by indulging him. Suggests he was a little more desperate for the bike than he was letting on. Or was interested in what else Gabe could offer.

He’s no stranger to being admired; sex is easy, and though he’ll never admit it he is desperate to feel wanted, even if it’s only temporarily. His eyebrows quirk at the obvious way he’s being checked out, though it’s more part of the game than anything genuine, he’s sure. If this asshole is expecting him to back down first in this unexpected game of chicken, he’s going to be disappointed.

“It’s not looking like much of a challenge from over here,” he points out, rolling his shoulders as he deliberately turns his back on the other man to fake interest in the bike once again. “You haven’t even given me anything to be interested in.” Decides it’ll annoy the other more to be dismissed, as it’s clear he’s used to being obeyed.

His hand trails down to trace the moulded plastic seat. Counts down in his head before he glances back across his shoulder, smug grin firmly established. “Can you even negotiate for something like this? Might want to fetch someone who can.”

The tension between the two of them is obvious, even if only to them. While the Eclipse Boss doesn't know where it comes from — this is still merely a business transaction between Eclipse and a drifter, right? — he still refuses to back down from the silent challenge. Like two alpha dogs staring each other down, both just as stubborn as the other to back down.

He laughs at the man's words, ignoring the sting of his ego. Wasn't much of a challenge, was he? The drifter should be thankful he had to put on the mask of a dutiful Eclipse member for this transaction — he wouldn't have been so polite otherwise, especially when the other man dares to turn his back on Étienne. Grey-blue eyes narrow slightly, but instead of biting at the line — instead of allowing himself to reveal too early his own cards — he instead cocks his head sideways and glances down with a hum.

“You'd do well not to turn your back on me.” It's a thoughtful hum, a musing that's quiet enough the other man might not have even heard him. How easy would it be to simply bend him over that motorcycle and give him a real challenge? He did ask for one, after all — right?

The game continues, a smirk thrown over the stranger's shoulder as a bold declaration fills the air between them.

“My negotiation skills are just fine.” He steps forward, breaches that comfortable bubble that still exists between them, and even presses his luck to step forward enough to prevent the drifter from having any room to escape — if he even wants to. “I always get what I want,” it's a low, husky whisper, before he backs off again, not pushing his luck more than he had to. He doesn't go any further than that, doesn't feel the need to emphasis he was at the top of the food chain, and didn't need to fetch anyone to save him. He'd gladly play out this game until the end.

What a strange start to his morning.

He hears the words tossed out almost too quietly to be directed at him; an observation, but whatever threat it might have been is lost on Gabriel, who takes each word as victory points. Bingo. Seemed he’d pegged the other man well; that obvious streak of competitiveness was something that he could use to his advantage. Gabriel’s cocky in his own abilities, his own appeal, and he’s confident he can control this. Whatever this is turning out to be.

He stands there and smirks as the other man steps further into his space, though it’s hard not to be hyper aware of his presence. There’s no pretence now to the sexual undertones of this odd exchange, has gone far past what he could potentially claim as just a play at aggressive dominance. His eyes flicker down at the soft words, not entirely unaffected despite his play at it, though the Eclipse member is out of his space before Gabe can do much but consider his next move. It’s interesting to see what’s shaken out already; damn if he wasn’t interested to find out what happened if he kept pushing. For the job, he tells himself, as if he wouldn’t be doing this anyway.

“No offence, but I don’t really give a fuck what you want. I don’t even know your name,” he points out, not entirely forgetting his mission. Names, ranks, numbers; it’ll all be useful, make it so Gabe doesn’t have to stand in North’s office and report his complete lack of tangible results to an asshole who’ll be quick to ridicule him for it.

“You know what I’ve got. What do you even have to offer?” A sly smile as he crosses his arms across his chest and looks at the other man, as if he’d been assessed and found wanting. “So far I’ve not seen anything that I want.”

Maybe it's meant to be more of an insult than anything, but the man's words bring a chuckle out of Étienne instead, a sly grin on his face as he tilts his head sideways ever so slightly. He didn't take any offense to the words — instead, he pulled out a rather interesting set of words from his comment. This man wanted to know his name, did he? How... Interesting. Names weren't really necessary in this line of work. Drifters came in, sold and bought what they needed, and they were on their way. In a way, everything was very detached — it kept both the seller as well as the buyer safe.

Yet here this man was, mentioning he didn't even know Étienne's name — as if this was the morning after a one night stand.

“You want to know my name?” he questions — a pause, as if considering it — before he grins and continues: “How romantic.” It comes out almost as a sneer, but he reels it in when the female Eclipse member finally returns with the oil she had gone to fetch. Étienne momentarily takes his attention off the other man to nod at her and murmur a quiet thank you as she places the oil on the ground beside him. His attention returns to the drifter at his sly words, a chuckle leaving his own throat at the words.

“Indeed. I know right now you are sitting on a motorcycle that, as far as I know, doesn't even run. That would sure be a nuisance to have to push back out to wherever you came from,” he laughs dismissively. He wonders: would the other man even want to bother with such a task? Or would he do it, simply out of spite?

“Now, what I have here,” he lifts a boot and places it on the top of the oil canister, leaning forward on his knee as he keeps his sharp gaze on the other man, “is currently the only thing that has a chance of getting your little toy there started. If I were you, I would start acting reaallll nice right about now.” He grins. A challenge. “As for what Eclipse could offer you should that bike actually run... Well, I have the authority to give you just about anything you could ask for.”

Romantic? Gabe nearly laughs. Wherever this aggressive thing is heading, he’s confident it’s not to romance. Ignoring the fact that they’re both clearly just trying to get a leg up over the other, and he suspects even if it ends in the bedroom it will still be more about winning than any sexual tension, he’s never been the sort to have romantic feelings for anyone. The few attempts of dating someone had left him quickly bored and wanting a change.

He’s glad of the interruption, because he wants to bite back but is aware he might need the other man, or at least needs not to be hated. He takes the moment of distraction to remind himself why he’s here. Friends, he reminds himself. He can do this. Much as he’s tempted to just take the bike and go – he’ll carry the damn thing out if he has to – he needs to show he can be useful.

He resists the urge to roll his eyes as the man makes a play of his position. The instinct to react in kind is strong, but he subdues it and bites his tongue. It hurts that he’s going to have to let this eclipse asshole win, but his mission has to come before his ego. He reminds himself that it’s easier to lose to this stranger than to North, who will never let him forget his failure.

“Fine,” he eventually answers, though the playfulness has gone from the tone. He’s disappointed to give it up, but he knows he can’t keep pushing. “You got me. Please.” Can he try for sympathy instead? He’s playing a drifter, so desperation is expected, right? He can’t really fake that he’s starving, bulky even under the ill-fitting clothing. A one-shouldered shrug, as if it hurts to admit it. “I need this. If you really can afford to buy it, then I’ll do whatever.”

Hopes that his companion is not enough of an asshole to take too much advantage of Gabe’s implied desperation.

Even if it doesn't show on his face, he's actually surprised that the drifter suddenly decides to back down from the alpha dog bravado he had been trying to put out the entire time they were conversing with one another. He supposes their game could only go for so long anyway before once of them had to snap and back down — and in his eyes, he would be the winner no matter what. As leader of Eclipse, he was currently the one with all the cards in his hand, and he wasn't about to back down on his own turf.

So he grins — makes it clear he knows he's won.

“Good boy,” he chuckles. It's condescending perhaps, considering he knew nothing about the other man, but he doesn't mind gloating for a bit if it meant stroking his ego. “Now then, looks like we can get back to business.” Much as he enjoyed their little game, Étienne wasn't necessarily in a place to be making enemies with drifters that could potentially become proper clients in the future. He doesn't know the other man — but that could change. He can sense the other members of Eclipse with their eyes on their conversation, clearly worried about what had previous been a heated discussion between the two men. Last thing he needed was them running to Paris to tattle on him for scaring another client away.

“Let's see if this will get your motorcycle to run,” he continues, taking his boot off the oil canister and waving someone over to fill the bike. “You'll have the honour of starting it again, of course,” he muses with a chuckle as they wait for the bike to fill, a sharp gaze trained to the drifter's face. The younger man really did cut a nice figure, didn't he? He'd be Étienne's type for sure — if he wasn't some dirty drifter. Shame. Even though he too lived in filth and squalor, there was still a snobby, rich part of him that had some semblance of standards... Even if they appeared paper thin.
