It's shaping up to be a perfectly normal Friday afternoon.

Given the nature of her job, Ananke doesn't really subscribe to the cycle of workdays and weekends like the civilians tend to. Her job is very... 'ad-hoc', to say the least, entirely dependent on whether there are nests that have been discovered or infected needing to be put down. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, there periods where the need for soldiers like her is limited. This happens to be one of those times.

It's a rare relief that she makes sure to take advantage of. Time to recover, at the very least physically (she just managed to take off the last of her bandages last week). Sure, there is paperwork to do (which she has been doing) and reports to make (which she has been making), but with a lack of more pressing matters to attend to Ananke has taken upon herself to 'relax', at least as much as she'll ever allow herself to. She has a mug of coffee. Her papers are neatly stacked in piles of 'done' and 'to-do', the latter of which she's been gradually chipping away at over the course of the day. The compound is quiet, with most people around being nest elimination soldiers like herself with little more to do than busywork.

Barring anything crazy happening, this should be as pleasant as a workday could possibly get. For once.

NOTES O LORD HE'S COMING

It's been a while since North last sought out his 'favourite' officer in the Military. The Major wasn't unaware of how their last meeting had ended, with him leaving in a haze of bloodlust and hunger. It wasn't often he was unable to suppress the urges that clawed at his throat, and he had taken to avoiding her for the most part since then — not that it was exactly a hard thing to do in a building as massive as the Military Compound. With dozens of floors and labyrinth-like hallways, and the fact they worked on completely different floors, it was easy enough for the man to do. But eventually he got rather bored with himself, and couldn't help the need to seek her out again for a little bit of fun.

It was still early enough in the day that the Infected felt sluggish, a desire to head back to bed — a feeling he had every morning when he was forced to wake up and attend to his duties. Ugh. But the thought of messing with Ananke again picked up his mood, and it didn't take his long to make his way to the office he knew she was currently working inside — it helped that a bit of flirting got information out of officers that could help him pinpoint her location.

He doesn't even bother with the handle, just boots it open with his foot.

“Anankeeee,” he calls out her name in a sing-song voice, blue eyes immediately trapping her with his gaze. “Ah, there you are. I've been looking for you,” he purrs, approaching the woman as she sat at her desk. He does his best to keep his gaze on her face, and not longer... Over the spots on her forearms where blood had previously covered them.

Oh no. Ohhhhhh no.

North hadn't intruded in Ananke's life in a while, and for a few peaceful weeks the specialist had thought
that he'd simply gotten tired of her. That he'd found some other poor, hapless soldier to haunt, like a poltergiest moving house because the current tenants had died. Alas, she now realizes, as he kicks down her door (her locked door) that this will never be.

Silently, she wonders if it's too late to pretend that she's not in.

"...hello sir." After glancing up to confirm that he is, in fact, standing in front of her and not just some stress-induced hallucination, Ananke immediately goes back to staring at her papers. After all, making sure your paperwork is in order is very important. North carries on like normal, as if the last time they'd met hadn't ended abruptly, awkwardly, and incredibly strangely. "I thought our unit was to be grounded until the next nest was found." Translation: there's no reason for North to be here. Not that this ever stopped him in the first place...

Oh, come now. They hadn't seen each other in what felt like weeks, and that was her only reaction to his intrusion? To return back to her boring paperwork? North wants nothing more than to sneer at such a greeting, but he chooses instead to keep a jovial, yet still twisted grin on his face, as though nothing pleased him more than to see her again. He hums, as if in thought, at her words, choosing to take a moment to look around the office she had chosen to seclude herself inside for the day. Very small, minimal, and dull — much like her apartment. It was as if the woman didn't understand that there were finer things in life.

“Indeed you are,” he finally speaks up as her wanders back over to her desk, taking a moment to look down at her paper work. Nothing of interest — at least not in his eyes — which suited him just fine. She wouldn't have anything to argue about in regards to the little request he had of her.

“Or at least, the specialist 'you' is grounded. But I need you for something else. Something a little more—” he pauses, a cocky tilt of his head, and a grin that doesn't quite scream friendly“personal.”

“I need you for a different kind of mission. All the Secret Service officers currently have their hands tied with other assignments — not that they would be of much use anyway. Unfortunately they are a little too well known around the Inner Citadel to go incognito for this mission. That's where you come in,” he purrs, a knowing grin on his face as he goes back to wandering around the office again, figuring he's given just enough information to see if she would rise to the challenge and take the bait. Little did Ananke know, what he had planned wasn't exactly in the realms of Military duties.

But by god, did the woman ever need what he had planned.

North appears to be a great deal happier to see Ananke than she is to see him, which is strange considering how how their last encounter ended. She'd expected him to at least gloss over it- the rude interruption, the sudden exit on his part, the... the licking, but apparently he's chosen to go the 'ignore everything and pretend it never happened' route. Well, that's fine by her. Just as long as he doesn't go around trying to lick people again.

Instead, the Major decides to invade her personal space again. Not that this place is particularly personal; the specialist doesn't spend much time in here, since her job mostly takes place outdoors, so she'd never bothered to decorate. But it's still annoying that he chooses to do it.

The distinction between her 'specialist' self and the rest of her is what's really troubling. Whatever North has planned, something tells her it's not a strictly work-related endeavor.

Ah, yes. There's that word again. "Personal."

Briefly, she wishes she wore glasses, so she could take them off and not have to look at North so closely. Or acknowledge the way he closes in on her from her seat, like a shark circling prey. "You mean to tell me," the specialist intones, "that the secret service officers, whose jobs are to do their missions in secret, are not secret enough to do this job." It's bullshit and they both know it. They also both know that North will not take no for an answer.

Ananke sighs. "What exactly did you have in mind?" She needs to know how elaborate her lies needs to be to get out of this.

They both know what he's asking is bullshit, of course they do, but it doesn't stop the man from continuing to push it just a little bit at a time. After all, this was the sort of comfortable dynamic they had settled into, isn't it? North would ask Ananke to do something absolutely ridiculous for him, and she'd have no choice but to simply agree and go along with his demands. He was her superior officer, and she was simply too loyal a dog to turn down a request from someone like him — even if she made it clear time and again that's exactly what she wanted to do. But even knowing that, it doesn't perturb North.

He keeps his eyes on her as she finally begins to respond to his request. She sounds almost tired as she speaks, as if trying to make sense of what he was telling her. In his mind at least it wasn't so difficult to understand — only certain officers in the secret service were truly secret as far as the Military goes. The rest were nothing but glorified police officers for the inner citadel, bodyguards for the rich, and they would be absolutely no help for the mission he had planned in his head. At least, that's what he tells himself.

“I'm glad you understand,” he grins with a short burst of laughter as she finishes spelling everything out. Finally it seems Ananke is willing to comply, and North stops his aggravated, almost predatory stalking to finally draw to a standstill in front of her, his eyes trained to her face.

“There's been rumours lately about a new club opening up in the Inner Citadel — rumours that it's just another Jabberwockies front, and the higher ups are not happy about that.” He makes a show of pausing, as if to think before he continues. “Of course we're not just going to go barging in there and ruining the mood if that really isn't the case. Instead we're going to need to go undercover...” He trails off, deciding the let her fit the remaining pieces of the puzzle into place. Going undercover meant one thing: they certainly weren't going to be wearing Military gear for this.

'Understand.' Yes, Ananke would like to think that she understood her superior office well, that she'd come to be able to predict his inconvenient whimsies and flights of fancy. But every once in a while he strays a little farther from... let's be generous and call it 'the socially acceptable', and the specialist is re-evaluating whether or not he is in fact insane.

Because only an insane person could pull half the shit he does on a daily basis and still manage to be (and stay) a Major.

She turns over the possibility that he's saying nothing but lies in her head. His explanation is vaguely feasible. After the stunt the Jabberwocky had pulled with the infected arena she'd had to deal with a few weeks prior it's possible that this too is vaguely related... that, and the demands of an irrationally demanding higher-up is something she's all too familiar it.

There is one word that sets Ananke off on edge a little more than usual. "So we are going undercover... as employees?" It's almost too much to hope. No, scratch that, it's definitely too much to hope for, but if there's the slightest chance that she can obfuscate her way out of what she thinks North is trying to do, she'll take it.

She doesn't seem to fight him on this, not like usual anyway. Perhaps he was finally starting to wear her down, break through that facade of being nothing more than an officer to the Military. Was he finally going to see her true personality underneath the wall? He grins at the thought, but doesn't let himself get too far ahead with things. Still, it's not until the end of his explanation that she finally speaks again, questioning how exactly they were going to proceed with going undercover. He gazes at her with his blue eyes, a finger thoughtfully placed against his chin as if thinking about things — as if he didn't already have a plan in place that he knew she'd absolutely loathe.

“No, no, employees wouldn't be possible. You see, they already know me as a customer...” He lets his words trail off for a moment, giving her time to work through the meaning on her own first. Even though the club was newly established, it wasn't exactly surprising the Major would be one of the first to attend the new club. Those socialite night scenes were something he lived for, whether it be for a cold drink — or a hot one. The gorgeous men and women that he could accompany to their beds at night was a nice perk.

“A customer is what I will be going undercover as — and you, my good woman, will be my date.” He grins — predator, self-satisfactory — but turns on his heel before he gives her any kind of chance to fight him on this.

“Don't worry, I've already taken your words into consideration from last time, and I've already picked out what you'll be wearing this evening. Can't exactly have you wearing your uniform, after all. Come with me to my office,” he continues to speak as he begins to leave the office and head towards his, fully expecting her to follow behind him eventually. After all, what else would she do? Say no? Hah! North knew Ananke much better than that. As long as a request was hidden behind the facade of being done for the Military, then he knew eventually she would crack and simply go along with it.

Like she'd thought, there's always a catch. Always a little bump in the road hand-crafted by North to make everything as difficult as possible for her. Ananke frowns at the excuse- just because North is known as a customer already doesn't mean that she necessarily had to pretend to be one too- but his real plan for her has her gawking. This is going too far, even for him. She has done some loathsome things in the name of the military- and even under North's orders specifically- but nothing quite so... so...

"...Sir?" He's already walking away, Ananke following helplessly along, and she'd protest harder if she'd known it wouldn't be falling on deaf ears. But of course that's too much to hope for. "What did you mean by 'last time' wh-" and then it comes to her in one horrible realization. She almost stops in her tracks. "You didn't."

The specialist knows as soon as the words come out of her mouth that yes, he absolutely did. Because of course he did.

What has he done?

Ah, that look of surprise on her face — it's not often he gets such an interesting reaction out of the Military officer, and he takes a second to appreciate it before he's on his way back to his office. He knows she'll follow along — doesn't even question it — and as suspected, Ananke is trailing after him as soon as he leaves his office. He doesn't stop, not even to answer her question. But he doesn't even try to hide the grin that spreads across his face as she seems to come to the realization of what he meant, and he only stops long enough when she does to turn around and wave her forward, urging her to continue following him.

“Come now, the club will be opening soon,” he urges before turning around and continuing on the trek to his office. He doesn't stop again, not even if she complains, and it's not until they're back in his office and he's fishing something out of the closet that he finally addresses Ananke again.

“I remember you mentioning you had nothing to wear for a night out so, like the good commanding officer that I am, I already picked you up a disguise,” he grins as he turns around, a dress clutched between his hands. “Don't worry, it should fit you perfectly.” He leers as he throws the dress in her direction, a mocking grin showing teeth. North liked to pride himself on the fact that he'd slept with so many people, it was easy for him to guess someone's size just by looking at them. Of course one would accuse him of being a whore that shouldn't be proud of such things but, hey — he took it as a compliment.

It takes her brain a few crucial seconds to process the situation, really think about it, and come to the conclusion that yes, this is happening. He's actually doing this. Not only that, but North planned this, well in advance considering what he's already done as preparation. Preparation being, finding her size (somehow?), getting a dress, and concocting an inane story as to why she should wear it. She knew he'd been put out when she'd refused that day, but the specialist didn't realize his resulting tantrum would take the form of... this.

"Be that as it may," Ananke says, careful not to grit her teeth, or clench the slinky, slippery thing he called a dress too tightly her in hands, "even if you're recognized as a customer there doesn't mean that I would be. If the Jabberwockies are actually using the place as a front, it'd be more effective for me to infiltrate their employees instead." It's a very reasonable proposal. In fact, it's by far an improvement upon... this.

She takes a moment to hold out the garment and look at it. Really look at it. "Besides, this seems like wholly inappropriate attire for... anywhere." Not that she knows what people wear to clubs, but this can't possibly be it, can it?

He grins as she clenches the dress between her hands, carefully measuring it up with his eyes now that he can see how it looks against her skin — yes, perfect. It looked like he had got the measurements rather close as well, although they had yet to actually see what it would look like. North refuses to wipe the lecherous grin off his face as he stares his subordinate down, her words doing nothing more than bring amusement to him. For whatever reason, he always enjoyed the way Ananke liked to bark at him first before following orders.

North lets out a small hum in the back of his throat at her words, as if contemplating what she said. Almost. But he had already made his mind up on how this mission was to proceed, and he wasn't about to change his mind to see her dressed up in a boring uniform. Hell, that would be nothing more than her just changing from one uniform into another. Ugh. Ananke could really be a stick in the mud sometimes... But that's why he was here to help, right? The man chuckles as the woman finally holds the dress out in front of her to take a look at it, and clearly she's unimpressed by what she sees.

“Nonsense. It's a typical garment for someone with a more feminine frame,” he purrs, using a lone finger to trace the silhouette of the dress. “You're simply too used to the masculine uniform the Military makes you wear. Now go get changed, specialist. You don't really want to try my patience, do you?” He questions her with a tilt of his head and a grin, almost as if giving her a choice in the matter. “We will be going together as a date. I've already done up the paperwork for it, and nothing you can say would convince me to write up an entirely new report.”

It's something of a lie. True, his job as operations management was to write up reports for missions, both before they were started and after they were completed. But this one? This one was personal and strictly off the records.

Ananke wants to ask many questions. Like, why does North insist on doing this? Why her? How did he find her exact size? Why is he like this? Alas, after working under him for so long, the specialist knows that she will never get the answers. North tends to follow an insane line of logic that Ananke can barely comprehend, let alone get behind. She's long since learned it's easier not to even try. The woman looks at the dress again. And then at North. Then back to the dress. It does seem like the kind of thing he'd go out of his way to buy, isn't it?

Briefly, she wonders whether filling for a sexual harassment suit would work at all. Who is she kidding, of course not.

"I see." Her eyebrow twitches at the very thinly veiled excuse the man delivers. Unlikely or not, his reasoning has her boxed in now, and call his bluff would probably b e more trouble than its worth. The specialist really, absolutely, under no circumstances wants to play along... but when he gets like this, North is hard to say no to. Not physically, obviously, but the ramifications of doing so are... annoying at best.

And so, Ananke turns and stalks off too get changed. But not without getting at least one word in edgewise. "Well, if we're going to do this," she asserts, "it'd be prudent for you to keep the food throwing to a minimum." Not to mention the licking. "We wouldn't want to get thrown out, after all."

He's won — they both know it — but then again, when doesn't he win? At least, by his definition, he never loses when it came to the little games he played with Ananke. Getting any kind of reaction out of her was always a plus, but this instance was probably the best out of all of them. He doesn't even try to hide the smirk on his face as she reluctantly, finally, realizes there's no getting out of this for her. North barely gives her a response to her parting quip, simply hums deep in his throat as if acknowledging what she said — but he doesn't, not really. He doesn't normally throw food around like some kind of animal. It was simply because last time she dared him, and... He couldn't exactly refuse such a challenge, right? It was definitely all her fault.

North stays where he is, long after she rounds a bend in the hallway and disappears out of his sight. Silently the Major counts to ten in his head, then he takes off after the woman, using his increased sense of smell to track her. Like a dog, but he would never admit to such things. It doesn't take him long to realize where Ananke was headed, and eventually he decides to their destination without bothering to track her anymore: the office he had found her in earlier. With no inner windows, it made a good changing room.

Upon arriving, North crosses his arms over his chest and leans back against the wall just opposite the office door, a wolfish grin on his face as he waits — see, he could be a gentleman when he wanted to be. A few Military personnel wander by as he waits, and he greets them with a grin and a flirtatious wink. Not that he was planning to pursue that, at least not right now. Right now, he was much more intent on— The click of a door unlocking.

He perks up, blue eyes trained to the door as it opens.

“I knew you'd look good in that,” North whistles as he compliments Ananke, appreciative of his taste — it certainly fit her very well.

Lately, Ananke has started to do something quite unlike herself. She catches herself doing it at her desk. In her bed. On the ride to and from missions, when there's a lull in the activity.

She's started to fantasize.

Well, perhaps that isn't the right word to describe it. She's started to hypothesize. Imagining different scenarios that, while not probable, are certainly possible. Sometimes she wonders what it would be like if one day she just stood up and... left. Took a truck and drove into the wasteland and became a drifter. Maybe took up mercenary work. Even if it meant a life of instability and uncertainty, it would mean freedom from the Military and never having to follow an order again.

The fantasies become more vivid the more time she spends with North. And they have never been so strong as when she walked out of her office wearing her ridiculous dress, and looked up to see the Major waiting for her as if he'd followed her there. Knowing him, he probably did.

"You neglected to leave it long enough to hide any weapons," is her most pointed complaint among many. She had managed to fit a knife in there somewhere, but the tightness of the garment meant it had to be hidden on the inside of the leg, which made it considerably more uncomfortable. "What are your plans for if the Jabberwockies catch on and decide to make an example of us?"
