Ettie's refusal to cooperate is infuriating, foolish, and most of all, dangerous. Ananke can't help but blink incredulously at this man, who probably knows nothing about fighting the infected, acting like he's going to take charge and have it end well. "First off, I am not leaving this place until the operation is over, and if either of us try to run around alone, we will die. Second-" But it's too late. Ettie has already turned around and started to move.

Again.

Towards danger.

Like a moron.

"Wait!" Barking out her orders gets her nowhere, so she sprints just past him and juts her arm out in front. Not the smartest move to do to a man with a gun, but she has armor and he's probably not willing to shoot his only possible ally, so Ananke is willing to take the risk. "You don't understand how this works. You will never, and I guarantee you, will never kill an infected horde by yourself. It takes support. It takes teamwork. It takes experience. And if you run in there alone, you will have none of those things." Even the one from before didn't die until Ananke and half a dozen of her teammates had gunned it down.

"If a military soldier that's killed dozens of them before can't survive by themselves, what makes you think you will? Now, you can cooperate, and do as I say, and I can keep you alive. I can even get you to an exit if you want to leave so badly. But you have to listen to me, because I guarantee I know how the Infected work better than you do." It's not a brag, it's a fact. For every civilian in these walls, today is a nightmare. For her, it's every day. She rides out, kills infected for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and comes back home every day to wash off the blood and grime. And men like Ettie, with their big guns and bigger egos- they never understand.

This is why she hates dealing with civilians.

Such a fool. It's the first thought that flashes through his mind when the female officer suddenly rushes to match his step before throwing an arm out to stop him in his tracks. Fueled by adrenaline and hyper-aware of the dangers around them, Étienne reacts instinctively, swinging his gun-wielding arm sideways to place the blunt end of the pistol's muzzle up against her armored side. He's still lucid enough that he doesn't immediately shoot, choosing instead to let them have a small stand off before he finally backs off, withdrawing his gun and pointing it back at the ground as he, annoyingly, has to stand there as she gives another long speech.

She begins to talk about teamwork. About experience and — God, he wanted to roll his eyes so bad at that moment, even if he manages to resist the temptation. She sounded exactly like his advisors. Teamwork this, work together that, don't do something stupid, Étienne. This is even more irksome, however, as it becomes clear the woman believes he's nothing more than just some ordinary civilian that got wrapped up in the wrong line of work. Oh, how dangerously wrong she was.

He knew, probably better than her, what it was like to take out a horde of Infected. He and his men were on the front lines of the battlefield every day. They didn't have the luxury of returning home to a city with massive, impenetrable stone walls.

He screws his mouth into an unpleasant expression, his hot temper a ticking time bomb that was slowly marching towards his own demise as his patience starts to grow thin.

“You're right, my mistake. How could a lowly, pathetic man such as myself ever compare to the great Military? Please, oh great officer, do protect me,” he snips out in the most snarky tone possible. The venom is hard and clear in his words. “All for the better, in fact. Do take charge. It'll keep the blood off me,” he continues with the snark, a dramatic flourish of his arms as he takes a step back, the gun loose in his hands. If the female officer wanted to play 'who had the biggest dick', he was willing to take a step back. For now. Let her get sprayed with the Infected blood instead, that worked for him. It would be much easier to slip away later when her attention was no longer focused on him.

Je devrais te nourrir moi-même des personnes infectées, he mutters under his breath, not even caring in that moment if she understood French or not. All the better if she did, in fact.

He cooperates- barely. Ananke can't tell where this man gets off being so confident when they're surrounded by monsters and one wrong move away from dying, but fine. If he wants to lose a dick-measuring contest with a woman, far be it for Ananke to stop him. At least now they can move as a passable unit, long enough for him to get out of her hair. At this point, she's tempted to 'let' him escape just so there's no chance of her having to deal with him afterwards.

(Besides, he's technically Criminal Activity's problem, not hers.)

"Of course, sir. I'm sure that's very important to you," she says in a rare moment of snark.

Their journey through the hallways is tense, but initially uneventful. The thundering of footfalls and gunshots above mask their sound slightly, but also that of any infected they might come across. Considering the latter's sense of hearing, Ananke makes sure to move slowly and carefully. Their corners are clear. There are no oddly moving shadows in the distance.

But then the sounds fade momentarily- a reprieve in the fighting above?- and before they pick up again, the specialist hears something echoing a few meters ahead. Something is being dragged against the floor. It's too light to be a body... She recognizes this particular pattern of noises, but it's interrupted, as if every fourth beat were interrupted.

Feral, Ananke mouths to Ettie. She tries to gesture the meaning with one hand. Twenty meters. Injured. She can't risk speaking out loud lest it hear her, but she can't imagine the man knows the usual military call signs.

Clearly she doesn't understand French — it's not really a surprise. The Military weren't exactly known for caring enough to learn about languages outside of English. If they needed to get their point across, they just used their fists or firearms like barbarians. But it's still a leg up the man has over the Military officer, and he doesn't even hide the cocky grin he flashes her at her snarky words. But whatever tension sits between them disappears as soon as they finally get on the move again, this time the Eclipse man allowing the woman to take the lead.

The two of them slowly make their way further and further into the Jabberwockies' base, having to be careful about their route seeing as neither knew exactly where the Infected had initially been released from. Étienne had a pretty good idea, but by the sounds around them, it was clear the monsters had already swarmed the entire place. God, how many did they even keep in here?

Étienne keeps his attention on the sounds around them, not trusting the Military officer enough to become aware of danger. It's because of this he heards the odd sound just shortly after the officer does, and he immediately slows his pace. His gaze automatically draws to the woman as she begins to mime some directions at him — he blinks blankly at her, his unimpressed expression make it clear how he felt. It's not like he didn't understand hand signals, but what Eclipse used was far different than what the Military used, and it was almost laughable that she expected him to understand her. Good thing he understood what the sound was without needing her to explain it to him. That shuffle was a sound no one wanted to hear when near an Infected nest, and it was just as unnerving now.

He throws her an annoyed look, but nods all the same. The sound is coming from around a bend in the hallway. Étienne reacts by carefully picking his way across the floor to the other wall, just barely hidden around the corner with both hands at the ready on his pistol. Much as he loathes to do so, he turns his gaze back to the officer, waiting for her signal for them to fire.

Whether or not the man understands her, he at least can read the situation enough not to charge in immediately. Good. Maybe they won't both die here horribly after all. With both of them positioned on either side of the opening, they'd each be able to get a clear shot of the monster.

She switches hand signals, just in case, counting down her fingers to the moment when she wants both of them to go in. There's a dozen thoughts running through her head, but she narrows it down to one idea- whatever is down the other end of that hall, it is not human and therefore must be eradicated. That's her mission. That's her objective. Even if her life is threatened- or this civilian's- their lives are outweighed by those of the Stronghold.

Three seconds. Three signals. Three deep breaths.

Go.

Ananke goes first. She rounds the corner, gun raised to eye level. The infected is there, like she'd thought. It's back left leg is snapped at the ankle. Even if it charges at them, it won't make it in time so long as she doesn't miss.

She pulls the trigger.

Three, two, one. The hand signals are clear, and Étienne watches the female officer just long enough to nod his head, giving her free reign to round the bend in the hallway first before he joins her. Adrenaline pumps through his body as he lifts his gun to be eye level — it's not fear that fuels him, but rather a twisted thrill that fills him. This is what suited him best, fighting back against the creatures that took over the world, rather than sitting comfortable and safe at his family's home in the Inner Citadel.

He spots the creature just seconds before it lifts its face and snarls at them — a row of perfectly sharpened teeth greets them, evidence of the feral mutation that flows through its blood. It's human — no, it's a monster, he reminds himself. Even covered in blood and tattered clothing, it still bore a striking resemblance to a human. The feral snarls and lunges at them, and it's in that moment that the officer pulls the trigger on her gun. There's no silencer on her gun and the explosion makes him involuntarily wince, but his gun remains steady as he fires a shot directly after hers. Blood splatters across the walls and floor as both their shots hit the creature in the chest, and it screams as it falls towards the ground.

But it doesn't stay down.

They must have missed its heart by mere millimeters, considering how accurate both their shots were. But the thing gets up again with a scream and — even with blood pouring from the gun wounds, even with a snapped ankle — its speed is nothing to scoff at. The thing is upon them before they even have a chance to fire another shot, all fangs and bloodied nails as it comes at them like an animal.

Étienne swears and leaps back just in time to avoid fangs snapping for his neck, and he reacts by bludgeoning the feral's face with the butt of his gun. It throws the creature off and it tumbles onto the floor again.

There's a multitude of lessons that have been drilled into Ananke as a member of the Nest Elimination team. The first and foremost is to never, ever let your guard down. Not when the infected gets shot. Not when the infected goes down. Not until its head is rolling or its heart is torn out by the roots. So when the thing they're shooting gets right back up and lunges at her and Ettie, Ananke is ready for it. Granted, she still has to dodge and reposition herself, circling around, but she manages to keep her wits about her at least.

The same can't be said for the blonde. Tch. Panicking. Classic rookie mistake. His struggling isn't in vain, however, because it's enough to give Ananke a few precious seconds to act. She could shoot at it, and at this close of a range, that would mean certain death for it, but a certain someone did just warn her about the dangers of friendly fire...

So instead, she opts for the knife. As the infected goes reeling from the hit to its head, Ananke swoops in from above and drives her dagger into the chest cavity left behind by their earlier bullets. The sudden spike of pain causes the creature's body to lurch and writhe, but Ananke keeps an iron grip on her knife. That split second of pain and distraction is all she needs to twist her blade and carve its heart into two. For good measure, she saws the dagger back and forth, jerking it through flesh and bone and muscle to rip the vulnerable organ into shreds.

As soon as it's done, the specialist frees her blade and retreats as far as the hallway will allow her, not willing to stay in close quarters for too long.

It's dead. At least, it should be. But Ananke knows not to simply assume.

(Rule number one.)

Étienne knows exactly what he's doing. He didn't survive for ten years outside Stronghold's walls by sheer dumb luck — no, he had to teach himself how to live a completely different lifestyle from what he had been used to the entire rest of his life. Sometimes, on the outside, things got ugly fast, and he knew how to react in a split second. Even if it looked clumsy to the trained officer, the crack of his gun against the Infected's skull is all that's necessary to throw it to the ground between them, giving them those precious few seconds needed to finish it off.

The woman is on the feral before him, brandishing a knife and violently thrusting it into the creature's chest cavity. A sawing back-and-forth motion — along with the feral's unholy screams — makes it clear what the Military dog is doing, and Étienne grimaces at the sight. It wasn't exactly a clean kill, but he supposes it does the trick nonetheless.

He steps back as soon as she is finished, his grey-blue eyes staring emotionless at the once-human on the ground between them. It's not a human anymore, he reminds himself, even if the blank stare on its face is unsettling in more ways than one. In the spare moment they have to catch their breath, Étienne lifts his gun to do a once-over and make sure he didn't damage it in any way by bashing it against the feral's skull.

“Who's the most savage, I wonder: Infected, or Military?” he suddenly speaks up, and although his voice is rather monotone as he asks the question, there's a hint of a teasing curve to the grin on his face. She did what had to be done, but it doesn't completely negate just how cold and ruthless she had been about such an intimate way to kill an Infected.

Checking his gun once more and making sure it's loaded, he simply nods first at the officer, then at the hallway, once again inviting her to take the lead. At least most of the blood splattered had covered her, rather than him.

The infected stops moving, and from this distance, Ananke can see its chest cavity, torn up and carved out by her own blade. Its heart is exposed and cut into pieces, rupturing in blood and bone from the hole that Ananke made for it. It's dead now. Good as the creatures are at faking it, no amount of pretending will make up for the fact that one of the two major organs it actually needs to survive is now eviscerated.

Not the cleanest way to do it, but a kill is a kill.

The man doesn't seem impressed. “Who's the most savage, I wonder: Infected, or Military?” And to be fair to him, Ananke is harrowing sight like this. Dripping blood and viscera, her helmet shielding her from the worst of the blood and the rest of the world from the worst of her. People have looked at her before like a monster in her own right. They wouldn't be wrong to do so.

"Does it matter?" The specialist answers, blasé as anything. She wipes her dagger clean on her own arm before sheathing it again. It shouldn't matter, so long as he's alive. That's all a civilian like him needs to worry about, isn't it? "This way," she grunts, not bothering with signals this time; they've made more than enough noise that if another infected were coming, it would have come for them by now.

His snarky words don't seem to phase the officer any, as her response is simply to question him whether it mattered or not. Étienne visibly screws his face into an annoyed expression, even if for the moment he keeps comments to himself. It's not until the woman is on the move again that he finally opens his mouth once more, not caring whether or not they were heard. In all honesty, the creatures could probably hear their heartbeats if they really wanted to, so no amount of stealth would ever be good enough for creatures made for hunting and killing.

“Oh, right, I forgot,” he remarks, words just loud enough to be heard over their footfalls, “the Military doesn't care what they're perceived as, isn't that right? Brutes, tyrants, dictators — it's all the same to you, just noise from the little guys placed firmly under your boots.”

There's a certain level of disgust in his words, even if he, honestly, had never been directly abused by the Military in the past. His confrontation with them had only started once he had left Stronghold and joined Eclipse, and even then, the two factions generally stayed out of each others' way. But he remembered life in the Inner Citadel, and how the rich had been treated like dolls shaped to live in the fantasy of a perfect world. That had been the Military's doing, brainwashing everyone into believing nothing was wrong in the world. What bullshit that had been, and the French man was more than glad when he had escaped the Military's claws.

Étienne slows his movement until he's suddenly at a standstill, staring at the female officer's back, not yet warning her she had stopped. There was a side hallway somewhere around here, he knew there was. He remembered seeing it earlier when he had visited back here, but as it wasn't the place he was being brought to, he didn't think much of it. The Eclipse Boss hesitates for only a couple seconds before he finally lets out an audible sigh, hands dropping to his sides with his gun pointed lazily at the ground.

“You won't find any exit that way,” he finally points out, with just a hint of an arrogant grin on his face. “The Spades have a side entrance they use to cart their cargo in and out of here. But knowing them, it's hidden,” he continues, shifting his gaze away from the officer to take in the long stretch of wall beside them. He was correct in that there was no visible hallway like there had been before. That meant there was a false wall section somewhere along the corridor.

Best they find it before an Infected finds them.

Ananke rolls her eyes as the man vocalizes his displeasure; it seems that beating one of these things is enough to get his ego inflating, enough that he feels confident shooting off his mouth instead of his gun. It's a good thing her helmet covers most of her face, or he might see it, get offended, and kick up even more of a fuss. "Yes, that sounds about right," she admits plainly, almost absent-mindedly. When these people have their mind made up about you, there's very little point in trying to change it, so the specialist tends not to bother. They usually shut up after you agree with them, because they expect you to argue and have no responses prepared otherwise. So what if he doesn't like the military? What would he do about it? Annoy her to death? Leave himself one gun short and all the more likely to die?

Unlike him, the specialist is more concerned with finding a way out instead of getting her verbal licks in. She keeps searching, sweeping along the hallways as procedure suggests, until suddenly she realizes the man has fallen behind.

Rather than deciding to rebel against his oppressive military ruler, however, he has a suggestion instead. Ah, helpful. Maybe. “The Spades have a side entrance they use to cart their cargo in and out of here. But knowing them, it's hidden."

Well, doesn't he seem familiar with the area. Though that makes sense, considering he's probably a patron, and regularly visiting a place does tend to make you more familiar with it. "Fine then," she relents. "If you're so sure there's one here, you can lead the way in looking for it." He could be lying, but there's no point in wasting both of their time, when such a decision could easily lead to both of their deaths. As long as they stick together, it'll minimize the chances of them getting separated and picked off individually.

She didn't seem to want to argue back against the rather crass picture he painted of the Military — and it doesn't really surprise him. Military were so damn arrogant that it didn't really matter to them what citizens of Stronghold felt about them; they knew they could squash any semblance of rebellion or discontent rather easily. It forces the man's lips into a wry grimace, but he decides not to push the issue any further. Let the Military dog stay high up on her pedestal, that was fine. As long as he could still use her to find his way out of the place safely, that was all that mattered.

When Étienne stops to gaze at the wall beside them, looking for the secret passage, there's a small amount of satisfaction that blossoms as she stops too, rather than charging ahead like a mindless bull. The grin on his face only spreads wider when she suddenly decides that he can take the lead.

“You're willing to give up leadership now? For me? I'm so honoured,” he laughs, although his words are much more of a sneer than they are jovial in tone. Much as he would like to play up the moment — sarcastically continuing with a new feigned honour to be able to be in charge of their small little group — Étienne isn't stupid enough to play that game. He knows as well as she does that their time was still limited, even though much of the excitement had already died down. There weren't as many screams as before, which could be either good or bad.

Good, if it meant the Infected had all been taken care of. Bad, if it meant all the Military officers had been slaughtered.

Choosing to ignore the Military officer for the time being, the man instead concentrates on the wall of the hall, blue-grey looking for something, anything, that could pinpoint where their point of exit was. He drags his glove-covered hand over the wall as he walked, hoping that he could at least feel where the hidden door might be. It took a moment — felt longer than it really was — before he suddenly felt a small divot in the wall. There it is. Satisfied he found what he was looking for, Étienne makes the bold choice to momentarily holster his gun at his backside once more, using both hands to dig into the small line and yank as hard as he could. The door swings open, revealing the secret hallway he knew that lead to the bowels of the Jabberwockies building.

“Let's hope there aren't any gang members laying in wait for us,” he murmurs in the direction of the woman before he grabs his gun once more and enters the hallway, urging her with a hand to follow and close it behind them. At least they knew there wouldn't be anymore Infected... Right?

Following and leading don't feel like very different concepts to Ananke. Sure, the jobs and responsibilities of each position are different, but at the end of the day, when a unit is dispatched onto the field, there are people above you who you need to follow and people below you who will suffer if you don't perform the way you're expected to. You all move as one. You all end up in the same place. If an infected gets the best of you, you all die. Fighting about who gets to call the shots is inconsequential in comparison to that.

Likewise, the specialist doesn't particularly care who's in front and who's behind, provided and the arrangement doesn't result in her dying, so sure. Let the man go in front. "Enjoy it while it lasts," she says flatly. It's not a threat. Whatever tenuous partnership they have, it's bound not to last long, with the raucous above gradually fading out. She has confidence that her team, at the very least, isn't dead. The folks at Criminal Activity, however...

Well, she'll find out soon enough.

Soon being however long it takes for the man to find his so-called secret passage. Ananke lets him look, but takes care to cover their flank while he holsters his gun to check the wall. One bated breath later- and the concrete gives way. Well, aren't the Jabberwocky full of surprises.

Unlike the blonde, Ananke is above sprouting snarky remarks even if things are going her way. Instead she obediently closes the passage behind her before readying her firearm again. If he wants to take his turn being the shield, so be it. "If there are, then hope our trigger fingers are faster than theirs," she mutters instead, readjusting her grip just to be sure.

It's not snark — just fact. At least right now it was. Still, whatever little 'feud' they had brewing between the two of them finally gets put to rest as Étienne moves deeper into the hallway, hearing the secret door shut behind them. Quiet. It's almost deafening now, after all the screams and snarls they had to put up with previously. The man stops long enough to hold his breath and listen for something, anything — but it's quiet. A part of him truly does believe the Jabberwockies had already evacuated the building after letting loose their little pets. No reason to stick around and risk getting caught by the Military, after all.

He hears the officer's comment, but he doesn't reply to her. Internally, he disagrees with what she says — while it was an annoyance that the Jabberwockies had released their Infected before escaping, some part of him recognized at least that they weren't trying to kill him. Which meant that he would rather things remain civil between the gang and Eclipse.

Not that he wasn't absolutely furious in the meantime.

Still, it's not enough to warrant him holstering his weapon. Not yet anyway. Instead, he walks slowly along the hallway, using what little light there was to navigate and make sure he wouldn't trip over anything by mistake. His shoulder bumps up against the wall as he walks, a feather-light touch to keep him oriented in the rather dark hallway. For the time being, all they can hear is each other's breathing, albeit quiet as they both seemed to realize there was a possibility still of having an Infected lurking nearby.

The smell of fresh air — or at least, as fresh as Stronghold air could possibly get — tickles Étienne's nose and he stops, turning his head backwards to gaze at the officer behind him. At least, he assumed she was; her dark attire made her blend in with the shadows perfectly.

“We should be getting close. Looks like we'll be lucky after all,” he whispers to her, nodding his head in the direction of where the escape was.

When he's not making sarcastic quips or complaining about the military, the blond man moves surprisingly well for a civilian. He doesn't get particularly disoriented by the dark or make any moves that would draw attention from an infected- at least, an inattentive one. If in another lifetime, he'd been drafted into the military, he might have made a capable soldier. A capable soldier being one who could shoot and march and throw a good punch or two- something tells Ananke that the 'following orders' part would prove significantly harder for him.

He turns to her, says that the exit must be closer. With her helmet and limited information, the specialist is skeptical, but with nothing to work off of, it's either take his word for it or not. "Lead the way then," she intones. "Unless you're getting cold feet about it." There could be anything waiting for them on the surface. In a worst case scenario, the Jabberwockies wouldn't even be their biggest problem- that'd be the Infected running amok. But the man had insisted on being in front this time, so who is she to try to convince him to relinquish the position?
