Raid on Sector 45 - Arcadia Orphanage

Comm-Network

AUTHORIZED MILITARY PERSONNEL ONLY
Should you receive this text, you are to report to Safehouse 17 in the Slums Residential District IMMEDIATELY. Failure to do so will result in immediate disciplinary action.

The communication came sudden. You may feel trepidation at the unexpectedness of the text, or annoyance that the notifying buzzing awoke you from a well-earned, restful slumber, but one thing's for certain- those that receive "immediate disciplinary action" rarely come back. Excitedly, begrudgingly, apathetically or otherwise, you strap on your military-grade boots and holster your military-issued weaponry and head towards Safehouse 17.

Like many of the safehouses marked on your comm map, it's a small, squat and unassuming building, designed to blend into its surroundings. In there, you wait, with the other officers roused from their day-to-day lives to heed the faceless call of their superiors.

This Random Event thread has the potential for action-based writing. The thread also falls under the site's 21+ umbrella, and may contain Mature content.

THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SIGN-UP

Eligible Characters

ANY MILITARY OFFICER: LIMIT (3/6)

Random Event Mechanics

Currently the Random Event welcomes a limited number of sign-ups and only those that are part of the Military. HOWEVER, as the event goes on, an NPC event will trigger the involvement of a limited number of Eclipse, Jabberwockies and/or Civilians.

This Random Event will introduce a staff-run NPC codenamed "the General", who is a Flag Officer of the Military. Any IC action taken against him will result in IC consequences (though, maybe this is what you want for your character?). In turn, interacting with him may change or influence future site-wide events.

There will be two types of staff posts: event posts made by the Plot/NPC account and posts made by the General account. The General will act as a playable character, along with OOC notes that sum up his actions that turn as well as potential actions your character may take with/against him (though these are only suggestions). Event posts will be less frequent and each event post will usher in a new weekly "round". Both post types will move the plot along.

The thread is staff-run; this means that staff will be posting at regular intervals to keep the plot moving. At a maximum, it will be once a week; however, if the participants are quicker at replies, then it's possible the staff may post faster as well.

Everyone is expected to post at least once a week, aka once a round. If you are unable to, your character will be NPC'd if necessary for that round (in a minor way) simply to keep the plot going. If you fail to post after three rounds, your character will be excluded.

You are welcome to post more than once a round, as long as it doesn't derail the thread.

More information may be supplied at the Random Event start.

How To Join

To join, simply reply in this thread to the comm and prompt provided above! The comm message was canonically sent out to "select" military personnel, yet any character in the Military can join with the assumption that they were one of the "select" officers, with no restriction concerning their rank (yes, even a lowly private can join with that assumption!).

The next event post will be posted September 8, 2021.

The air is thick with the scent of rain. From the distance, you hear the deep roll of the thunder and the spill of light from the only window in the hideout turns from the white glow of day to somber gray. As you notice this, you wonder just how long you've been waiting here. Your eyes shift to the other three officers that have heeded the call, a mix of soldiers from all ranks, all equally kept in the dark as to why they've been summoned.

Then, punctuating the groan of the wind against some unsteady structure, you hear footsteps approach the entrance door. The steps are slow and heavy, with the telltale clunk of Military-issued boots. A shadow moves from under the door and pauses. Then, the door swings open and a man spanning the width of the doorframe and well above the height stands rigidly before you. Besides his impressive size, the next thing you notice is his eyes- well, eye. One callous blue eye peers down at you. The other half of his face is covered by skin scarred and pulled taut to the consistency of leather, like he'd suffered from a terrible burn. He had another eye that glowed a shade of brilliant, cardinal red, which denoted its artificial nature.

His one-eyed gaze swept over the entirety of the officers that had been provided for him. Crammed in the safehouse were four individuals dressed in appropriate Military-grade uniforms. He could not help but frown at the sight they made, for he requested six soldiers. The disappointment was cast grizzly on his scarred face, as he bowed his head to enter the safehouse. His close-cropped hair brushed the ceiling above, and should he stand on his tip-toes, he'd have to bend down in order to stand comfortably.

"The Arcadia Orphanage in Sector 45 has been compromised," he stated, his voice low, monotone and menacing in its lack of warmth, like he were reading verbatim from the mission report. "Seneca Waters is wanted for the illegal quartering and smuggling of bite victims. She's to be taken in alive. Any others you see in the orphanage are to be killed on sight." His one seeing eye observed the officers closely, as he raised his wrist-comm and added, "Even the children. Especially the children."

His massive finger inputted something into the glowing screen of his comm, casting hoary shadows on the General's wounded visage. "I'm uploading the invasion plan to your devices. Seeing as there's only four of you, modifications are in order."

A beep signaled the completion of the upload and the General lowered his comm to point a finger at the two men (Alexander Geoff and Heath Langstrum). "You two, you're to enter in Position A. The other two-" He looked towards the two women (Asena Noir and Tomika Pfeiffer). "You're to enter in Position B. I'll take up Position C. We leave in five."

Orders given, the General turned his attention from the officers to the weapon he slung off his back and settled on one of the counter spaces. It was a huge gun, bigger than the standard issue rifle, and possessing multiple ammunitions chambers- a gun that required incredible strength.

Despite Asena's reluctance, she dragged herself out of bed and to the safe house, anxious already about what would arise. As she wiped the sleep from her eyes, she looked around at the few others who had shown up, each with a familiar face and a name she couldn't remember if she ever even knew them to start with. Trying to wake herself by stretching her arms above her head, a groan escaped her lips, but when she opened her mouth to speak it quickly shut as soon as she saw the General.

He had her full attention as she soaked in his words along with his appearance, shocked by both. While she hoped people weren't dumb enough to hide bite victims, she was constantly amazed by the stupidity of others. Who would even want to put an entire community at risk like that? This woman obviously. She was ok with the plan up until it came to killing children, the look on her face said it all but she dared not speak out against it. How was she supposed to kill a child? She was going to avoid it at all costs but when it came down to the safety of her and her partner she was sure she would follow through. She hoped she would follow through...

She glanced over at Tomika trying to gauge the other woman's reaction to all of this. Would she be able to do whatever needed to be done when the time came? Hopefully one of them would. Walking over to Tomi she offered a smile, may as well be nice for a second since they could potentially be dead by the end of this. “ Hopefully this doesn’t take too long, I really just want to curl back up in bed.”, she laughed all while praying they would only have to deal with this Seneca Waters person and not any crotch goblins.

Within seconds her eyes were fixed on the General once again, eyes moving to his gun and then back to him narrowing slightly. ” What do you plan on using that thing on, Sir? It looks like it would be a little overkill for a bunch of kids and some off the wall woman.”

Her heterochromatic gaze swept cursorily over the soldiers gathered in the tight space, before they shifted back down to her nails, where her thumb casually crazed over the fine lacquered beds. The confidential text had come during a manicure, and she was so exasperated that she had considered pretending as if she had not seen the message. Why would they want her? She was one of the Military's most bare minimum patrol officers, and she made sure this stayed true, as this position was not one of her choice. This was the one time she hoped she stayed invisible, so that on the off-hours she could go back to clubbing and dining with her friends.

But a text from her mother, less than a minute later, coaxed her out of her appointment, and she arrived at the safehouse with barely-dried nails that she had to shake every few seconds or so to get the satisfaction that they would not be ruined. Already she was late, in the hassle to get on her uniform and holster, and she looked meekly towards the other three officers, their badges denoting a rank higher than hers. Upon closer inspection, they seemed just as confused and wrested from their day-to-day activities as Tomika was, the Pfeiffer noticing the stray wisps of bedhead on the only other female.

It was not until the General came, just a little after Tomika, that the patrol officer got a sense of why they were here. He was a massive person and made even Tomika shrink a little against the wall she leaned upon.

The orders gave her a sense of unease. Although she had needed to shoot a gun before, she'd never had to kill anyone. Her eyes flickered down to the service pistol strapped at her side, unknowing if she could ever use it against a literal child. And then, she looked back up at the officer who'd entered, those cold eyes, and wondered if he really believed that orphanage to be, as he put it, "compromised".

Asena approached her and Tomi cocked a smile back at the woman, "And I've got a bottle of rose with my name on it." That smile fell shortly, as she turned towards the hulking man who now preened over his massive gun like a mother over its child. She crossed her arms at him, unamused brows drawn over a glare of clear annoyance, "Yeah, like, who even are you? I don't see a name tag or badge or whatever. Sir."

Today is just a typical day for the Security Lieutenant.

He was used to missions like this. Go in, neutralize the target, and get out. While there was some uncertainty in who he had received the comm from, he knew how difficult it was to hack the Military comms, and thus knew it was someone higher up the hierarchy. Considering he didn't even have a Captain anymore to follow under, it made sense for him to be contacted, as the highest ranking officer directly in the Security Branch.

He doesn't say anything to the other officers gathered in the room, simply fiddles with his firearms and keeps to himself. Heath's head raises as someone joins them late to the party, and he frowns when he recognizes it as one of his very own patrol officers. Pfeiffer, wasn't it? Yet before he even gets the chance to stomp over and reprimand her, they're interrupted suddenly by someone new joining the party.

Someone he'd never seen before in his life.

The man's wearing a Military uniform, so clearly he's one of them, and while questions bombard him from all sides, he keeps his mouth shut and listens as the man begins to list out their objectives. Unlike the two women who seem to shuffle uncomfortably at the mention of eradicating children, Heath doesn't flinch. He doesn't even blink. He was used to the savage methods used by the Military to keep others under control, and as far as he's concerned, it's often necessary to ensure that humanity still has a safe place to prosper inside Stronghold.

Heath removes his comm device and goes over the plan in his head as the man informs them he sent the details to them. Nodding, Heath already prepares himself for, yet again, just another task in the daily life of him. As they begin to leave, the two women pip up and begin talking to the commanding officer. Heath keeps his mouth shut for good reason, even if he is curiously listening in for answers.

Massive fingers passed over the intricate mechanisms of his gun, so large it had to be carried on one's back until it was slung out for use. Like the rest of the General, it was well-maintained and clean, a flashy piece in the ruin of the Safehouse. Usually, his soldiers did not deign to direct conversation in his direction; he tried to make sure of, keeping his wide back to them. But he heard one of the females pose a question at him.

He looked over his shoulder, his one good eye gleaming a glassy blue at the officer who inquired about his weapon. He had half a mind to discipline them for speaking out of turn, but it was more essential that they understand the danger of the mission.

"For all we know, those aren't a woman and children anymore. Do not hesitate to use as much force as necessary against them, officer, or I'll have a word with your to superior."

The woman beside the first officer spoke, this time, in a tone that was blaringly condescending. He threw frosty, displeased eyes at the woman, barely even a girl, who so callously regarded him. His thin upper lip curled over the square of his jaw. He stepped out from the counter, away from his gun, and positioned himself so he allowed his full size to eclipse that of the officer.

Eyes, one red, one blue, drilling holes into her, as he growled, "I'm the flag officer keeping all of you fools alive. The only other thing you need to know- speak out of turn against me, and you'll lose more than your job."

Then his gaze flickered over to one of the male officers, who's blue eyes examined his comm with little hearsay. If a tight jaw and cruel look meant approval, then the General approved. He walked back with thunderous steps to his weapon, strapped it back over his shoulder and turned to place a hand on the Safehouse's door.

"We've dallied enough. Keep your comms on and report back once you've made it to your position. Then don't move until I give further orders." With that, the General pushed open the door, letting light spill in and illuminate the dust that filtered through the air like dancing lightning bugs. All other questions were left unanswered- it was time to move out.

You follow the General out. The world is lighter than in the dinge of the Safehouse, though it is not necessarily sunny out. Sunlight is blocked by plumes of dark clouds as the air hangs thick about you with the promise of a storm. The Orphanage is surprisingly close to the Safehouse and soon the building looms in the distance. It is a small and squat red brick structure, snaking amongst the cracked concrete that's overgrown with moss and weeds. On a wooden sign, you can hardly make out the faded words: "Arcadia Elementary", in which "Elementary" is crossed out in a singular, thick line of white paint and the word "Orphanage" is sprawled crudely beneath it.

In the shadow of a nearby abandoned complex, the General nods- he expects you to fall into your posts. The orders were to get into your position, comm in affirming you've done so and waited for further orders.

You see two options that you can do:

[ FOLLOW ORDERS ]  or  [ DON'T FOLLOW ORDERS AND FACE THE CONSEQUENCES ]

Which do you do?

It didn't feel right to be on a mission without Dallas. The other was more his brother than the actual biological one, and it was rare that Alex would be found anywhere without Dallas at his side. Still, as it was a summons presumably from a higher up, the Captain of the Task Force found it hard to say no.

Armed to the teeth with almost his body weight in Military commissioned arms, Alex showed up at the given meeting point far earlier than most, routinely scouting most of the area before finally settling somewhere to anxiously wait for the rest of the unfortunate souls summoned by the cryptic text.

He greeted each person that popped up one after another with a solemn nod, noting their faces and connecting them with names in his head. He knew all of them. Having a family deeply rooted in the Military offered its perks, more than what he could glean from smooth-talking Recruitment personnel. However, it was the presence of the one-eyed man which almost but not quite surprised Alex. Yet such expression was only short-lived as the details of the mission were finally revealed.

A trace of bitterness filled his mouth as he listened to the One-Eyed Wonder commission them to kill children. Once upon a time, Alex would've also been like the two women, adamant about using force against goddamn fucking children. But in his eighteen years in the Military, he had seen his fair share of Infected children and their devastating brutality against his own men, thus somehow that desensitized him from the thought of using his skills and weapons against those they will be possibly facing now.

However, being desensitized during the act itself did not mean it does not come to haunt him at every goddamn opportunity. This was why he took care to hold back both the young female officers a little before following after the One-Eyed Giant. "Following him out would be up to you. But if you continue and you see any child, move to incapacitate, not to kill. I'll deal with them later." He whispered over their general direction.

From what he knew, between the four, he was the highest-ranking, presumably only a few positions lower than the One-Eyed Giant. He too was curious as to who exactly the man was but something about the high-end comms the other possessed and the pristinely clean weapon he held told Alex that the other man was on a level higher than himself.

In his opinion, a thorough inspection of the children would've been better than outright killing them. Had he the authority, Alex would've opted to have all of them corraled first and inspected by Cypher. Yet as it stands, he could only save the women from the nightmares he suffer himself. And to ensure that happens, he must spare them the act of killing the children.

He doesn't think he needed to convince Officer Langstrum to do the same as what he told the women but nonetheless, Alex looked at the other man to tell him that he was proposing the same action plan to him.

Then, with gritted teeth, the Captain of the Task Force began to think of his little sister Bella, thinking of how she had looked like when they found her that filled himself with murderous thoughts. He needed such drive to do what he would do next and he needed to compartmentalize so that he wouldn't think of how he basically armed himself to the teeth to murder children.

Oh, maybe she would be able to get along with this other woman, she didn’t seem bad at all! Nice, laid back, and she drank, which added bonus points for sure. It all seemed very hopeful until Tomi opened her damn mouth and began spewing off a bunch of insubordinate shit. She was crazy, she had to be, there was absolutely no other explanation for this amount of audacity. ” Shut the fuck up you egg before he eats one of us.”, she muttered over to Tomi as she took a quick step away. Asena was loyal to the cause regardless of whether she really believed in what they laid out in front of her or not, she would have never acted out in the way that Tomi just had.

She felt like a scolded dog when the General acknowledged her question, shrinking away hardly satisfied with his answer. Regardless of if they were infected or not they were still very obviously women and children. What if they weren’t infected, were they expected to kill uninfected women and children? Would them being infected make it any easier? She had so much she wanted to say but instead she remained silent not daring to speak up again.

She made her way towards the door, ready to follow the General into whatever shit show they were heading into without further question, listening to Alexander and rolling her eyes. She knew he had the best intentions with his words but there was no way she was going to let anyone, including him, clean up behind her. She was here to do a job just like the rest of them and if that meant killing children then so be it...so be it. ” Let’s go sassy.”, she growled back at Tomi as she headed out.

Heath is ready to go, even if they're slightly delayed by the one-eyed giant that turns to address the two women barking out questions as if they had any right to do so. Did they not go though the same Military Academy he did? That was sure some balls to even question a higher-ranking officer's orders. Which, ironically, is what he's about to do.

His attention is mostly distracted by The General, as well as the plans on his comms device, but Heath does look up at the other male officer when he begins to speak. He does recognize him of course, Alexander Geoff, Captain of the Task Force Branch. While he was a rank below the other man when it came to hierarchy, they were more like opposites of one another than directly in line. Both working on opposite sides of the wall. Besides, considering the Security Branch's last Captain had been arrested recently for fraternizing with the Jabberwockies, Heath had been left as temporary Captain until they could find a replacement. Putting both the men on equal grounds.

Two sets of blue eyes match one another, a silent question floating between the two of them whether or not Heath would back up Alexander's command. Lips twist solemnly for a moment, before—

"With all due respect, Captain, this is my turf. You might be used to dealing with Infected out in No Man's Land, where one escapee doesn't mean much. But in here, one lost Infected could mean dozens of bite victims within a 24 hour period. It could lead to the collapse of Stronghold," he speaks in a deep, commanding voice, his gaze drifting between Asena and Tomika for a moment before returning to Alexander.

"A second's mistake is all it takes for one of those things to get loose," he continues, gaze settling on the two women once more. "Shoot to kill. Nothing less. If you can't handle that, then I suggest you hang up your badges now and go home. Weakness will get you killed." There's a strong emphasis on his final word, his gaze sustained as he tries his best to make sure they got the point. Especially Tomika — considering she worked under him, he knew she wasn't exactly the best Military material yet. But he also knew if she looked down the barrel of a gun into the face of an Infected child and hesitated — she'd be the one being carried outside Stronghold in a black bag. He needed them to understand that.

Without anything else to say, Heath fixes the gun on his back before heading out of the room, following after The General.

HEATH HAS CHOSEN TO FOLLOW ORDERS
